Best [Cheap] Curries around London?

It's kind of true but at the same time cooking styles have to evolve as well especially when migrating to different countries. Otherwise in Australia we would all be eating meat and three veg. Best Indian food I've ever experienced was in a small restaurant attached to a very quaint hotel in Pondicherry near Madras. So good that MrP ate a plateful of Indian spinach and wanted more. Actually, best ever food. But the waiter was exactly like Manuel in Fawlty Towers. He delivered the wrong food all the time and the diners would say thanks then when he'd left the room we would ask for who had ordered the dish they'd just received and swap. It was priceless. And it's India.

Mostly Bangla style there - my daughter lived on Hanbury St that crosses Brick Lane so visited a few local establishments.

P.S. Hanbury St also hosted one of Jack the Ripper's crimes back in the 1880s.

That's been on the avoid list for many years now, it's not what it used to be.

There's still some decent places in Tooting which also has the benefit of not being far from me. There's a great Afghan place (Namak Mandi) which even has quite a unique setup there in terms of eating!

Tayyabs near the East London Mosque (83-89 Fieldgate St, Whitechapel, London E1 1JU)

If there are a few of you order a curry or two of your choice and the 'mixed grill' (which is not on the menu).

The lamb chops aren't bad there. A few of my friends rate it but have been a few times now and didn't get what the fuss was.

Brick Lane nr Spitalfields Markets. Is this no longer trendy to wander down on Sunday afternoons. What makes it different - I've only ever been there when the market is on

It's just very average run of the mill curries, catered to tourists. Tooting at least has the benefit of being out in zone 3 so less likely to get the usual tourist traffic.

+1 for Tayyabs, that was my go to when I lived in London and I still miss the lamb chops. The ambience and service isn't great, but the price was right and there was no corkage charge when you BYO.

It's OK for people that live in London but the rest of us are just sitting here going - oh when is it all going to end.

@Flashback you're going to have to take one for the team and try them out and send photos ;)

With local lockdown looming over our head again that may even be a struggle for me too!

Getting people out to socialise is also another battle. I am visiting Namak Mandi on the weekend though with friends before multi household gatherings are killed off too so will snap a photo of that if I remember.

Goodness Gracious Me - that's quite a rant. But I've never been to Dishoon, so she might be right. Last Indian restaurant I visited in London was Vijay in Willesden Lane between the Kilburn High Road and Paddington Old Cemetery. Was in the UK last year for the Rootstech Genealogy conference, and we had an Airbnb just a short walk up the road in Brondesbury. No complaints about the food, but I've had better. My only grievance was that it is a small place, and they had a party of about 20 odd people in that night and it was so noisy, Several people have told me that the best Indian food is oop north - in places like Burnley if my memory serves me correctly.
Just looked and it's 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor! VIJAY, London - Updated 2020 Restaurant Reviews, Menu, Prices & Restaurant Reviews - Food Delivery & Takeaway - Tripadvisor

Obviously plenty of curry place choices but depending on where your travels take you (and at the risk of overkill) I can recommend Anupam, an unobtrusive Indian restaurant in a small lane off the main street in Great Malvern. Can't remember its name but there's also another very good one in Fulham Road close to Fulham Broadway station and just up the road from Chelsea FC.

Lovely area, some nice walking around there. Have marked it up to try next time we're out that way, thanks for the tip.

Yak & Yeti are doing a pseudo "eat out to help out" extension of sorts (25% rather than 50% that the UK Gov was giving during August). Given it's also not far from here and some of our friends, we've booked a night out to go try it next week. Shall report back........ assuming London's lockdown measures don't stop multi household meets, which is slated as maybe coming in as early as next week, but I think we'll be just in time to avoid that.

Photos and menu please. Tell them you are doing it for research for friends stuck in Australia.
