Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Every 'opportunity' for an individual business or an industry that relies on people coming together has an equal opportunity for death and suffering. It's really as simple as that.

I don’t think it’s quite an equal opportunity for death and suffering (unless you are reporting from channel 7news :) )

I guess I have more faith in us being able to better manage quarantine facilities with all the lessons learned in Sydney and Melbourne and the opportunity exists to allow more Australians home, if we can solve for the constraints that the government departments are facing.

But anyway it may be a moot point now with states charging returnees for their quarantine - it may cap the numbers trying to return anyway due to the cost involved...

Well if you do manage to fly out, it will now cost $3000 Quarantine Fee to get back in starting in NSW and most likely to spread to all states soon (as otherwise returnees would target the fee-free states).

International travellers flying into NSW will pay $3000 for their two-week stint in hotel quarantine from midnight on Saturday, no matter where they ordinarily reside in Australia.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the decision to charge all returning travellers, including Australian citizens, after national cabinet announced caps on the number of people arriving in Australia on Friday.

On Friday, Ms Berejiklian indicated that NSW would charge overseas visitors for hotel quarantine rather than NSW residents, but the new charges announced on Sunday apply to all travellers.

From Saturday, travellers will be charged $3,000 for one adult, $1000 for each additional adult and $500 per child aged three and over. Children under three-years-old will stay free of charge.

I'd aim to fly into SA. They have quoted $2000 and just seems a nicer experience with balconies etc and people say the food has been excellent.

Well QLD also makes you pay-$200 a day per person for 14 days.Victoria at present has a moratorium on OS arrivals. You can't fly direct into Tasmania.
Western Australia has announced they will charge for quarantine for returning Australians from 17/7 but couldn't find the amount.

As to OS flights it is no longer Covid that will stop me travelling.I have no intention of travelling to the USA for possibly 3 years due to the violence which I can only see getting worse.

Watching the US implode is very sad .
The rise and fall of civilisations is common through history but it's nicer to read about it than to live through it.

Sounds good. Is that a ‘per room‘ or ‘per person’ rate? Queensland charges $2,800 for solo travellers, but there are discounts for quaros together; $3,710 for 2 adults, $4,620 for 2 adults and 2 children.

The $3,000 mentioned for NSW sounds comparable to the solo Qld rate, but I can’t find anything official about the charge yet.

If this goes on forever, we may need a thread for quaro bargains.:D

cheers skip

IMO - if you're paying you should at least get to choose the hotel. (Note I fully support the user pays approach with maybe a very few exceptions for "hardship" cases.) I also think the returnees should pay the fee before boarding the flight back to Australia not after their quarantine is completed. (I can see many just not paying the bill - much like the fines - how many of these will go unpaid - how can they be collected - unlike traffic / parking fines you can't (I presume) cancel / not-renew their DL).

With a user pays approach the government could be more lenient about giving travel ex-OZ permits. If someone is willing to pay on their return then I presume they are really keen to travel (usually for family / business / other compassionate reasons). I do appreciate that regardless of who pays - the quarantine process is a significant burden on the state governments. What I can't figure out is where all these people are coming from ..... news reports don't give these stats ..... I'd also be interested in knowing from which countries the returnees who test positive are returning from since the %age of positive cases among these "seems" very high.

Agree re the choice but the choice has to be limited to hotels officially registered for the quarantine period. I think that the limitations should likewise be reduced, not to allow holiday vacation but where it can be proven that there is business, or close personal relationship issues involved and by that I mean partner, child or parent.

SA currently had around 500 passengers from India and Malaysia So far, and the group from India have now been released, there were only 3 positive cases who tested positive 12 days ago and they were expecting 25 based on statistics. Those three are no longer positive. The batch who arrived from Malaysia I think are still a few days away from being determined safe to exit as they arrived later. So much better than expected.

Was wondering what I posted months ago. At this stage incorrect about some of domestic and maybe about right on international.

Parts of Asia: August or September
Parts of Europe: September or October
North America: Who knows, but it seems to have gotten away from them

But, depending on how things go, we may get some freeing up of domestic flights maybe June/July.

Whatever happens, it will most likely be piecemeal.

Well, I was way optimistic. Although I think I was done in on domestic on the apparent change in strategy from suppression to elimination....

Got the piecemeal bit right though!

I could be wrong, but I think I read somewhere there are more than 1M aussies spread all over the world, more than 300,000 of them travellers.

Multiple retrieval flights have come from every continent except Antarctica.

I dunno how this would work given international law. Aussie citizens can't be denied entry to Australia... can airlines refuse to carry an Aussie citizen if they have a valid passport? And when they turn up they have to be let in, and they would have to be quarantined. I wonder if the ATO would get involved somehow to add the cost of the quarantine to tax?

...but if an airline is told they won't be able to disembark more than xx_ number of passengers on arrival, they are not going to let them board/cancel or not accept the reservation.

Actually if a couple or family it will be cheaper in Sydney than Brisbane.Sydney $3000 plus $1000 for every extra adult in the family.
Qld-$200 per night per person so $5600 for a couple v $4000 in Sydney.
Can't find out if SA's $2000 charge is per person nor find info on what WA is going to charge.
