Seems to me you want someone to do your home work. We all have rights and I will exercise mine to the full extent of the law to protect myself and others who exercise those rights, you may like governments planning your life mate, But I am very capable in planning my own with out any government interference or assistance. Thanks case is closed for me. If they succeed in pushing everyone to vaccinate against their will to get there PP I can see big trouble brewing ahead. And my flying OS days will be all over. GL

This is a tongue in cheek question but surely all passports expiry date should be extended for the period of the travel ban imposed by the government?

Nice dream..., but along a similar note did anyone consider lobbying the Government for issuing passports for 10 years and 6 months instead of just 10 years?
You can not travel on a passport valid for less than 6 months on return trip, so current passports usability is closer to 9 years and 6 months at best (still paying for 10years).

This gets trotted out all the time, and is not technically true. There are many countries that require 6 months validity after your proposed visit, but this is far from universal. There are plenty that are happy as long as the passport is valid until the day of your proposed departure, and others that are happy as long as it is valid on your arrival.

New Zealand only requires the passport to be valid on arrival, and there is little chance of an unplanned stopover in any third country, so travelling to New Zealand with a passport close to expiry is not a problem. Given a lot of Aussies may travel to New Zealand (and in the near future, it is an even more probable destination), then you can get the full 10 years use out of the passport travelling to NZ.

The UK requires the passport to be valid for the length of the extended stay. Whilst travelling to the UK with a passport having less than 6 months remaining validity would not be a problem, it carries a risk if transiting via Singapore - which does require 6 months validity from the arrival date. If a flight gets cancelled, and you are required to stay overnight, you will end up having to stay airside, not going to a landside hotel. A risk I didn't take last year, and renewed the passport (and just as well, long delay on overnight flight back from SIN-SYD, and so had a nice hotel stay and walk around town).

This is true - the problem is that upon checkin, staff see less than 6 months validity and automatically say No and are too lazy to check!

Technically both previous comments might be correct, but .... once the computer system at check-in starts rejecting your passport on a long journey due to one of the transited countries restrictions, you are in a big hole.

I experienced this problem myself, even though did not intend to stop over in Indonesia. KLM system refused boarding due to Indonesia requirement for the passport to be valid for 6 months plus upon the arrival.
If it had not been for the other EU passport manually entered into KLM booking system, the hole would have been without escape.
Hence, never again will I allow my passport to be valid for less than 12 months before traveling anywhere; not even NZ
10 years passport validity fee for 9 years of actual comfort!

Just as another comment to watch out for, do not apply to have your passport renewed if you think that you will need to use it soon in a hurry, at the moment with state border closures, passports being printed in Melbourne, not many aircraft flying and hence Australia Post going into glacial mode for registered and all mail (and tracking of registered mail not being currently done) - a passport applicant has no idea when their new passport will turn up, and of course your old passport is helpfully destroyed when you submit your application.

Not a huge issue for most people at the moment, but for people who may have ill or sick relatives, and may have the need to travel overseas urgently and are considering getting an ABF exemption to travel overseas, bear this in mind before you decide to renew your passport.
