Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Has anyone started to plan overseas holidays ? I am contemplating a trip to Japan Oct 2021. Not sure how much is just being hopeful and how much is I need to plan a trip even if it doesn't come off

I’m still holding out for a miracle that this October’s holiday goes ahead. Reckon it’s about a 5% chance of happening at this stage. I would sincerely hope that travel in October 2021 has returned to normality or close to it

We still have two trips booked one end of sept for two weeks and one end of Nov . The Nov one has USA which I think won't be a good place to visit at that time

No. I will travel when I can but without knowing when and where I will restrict myself to daydreams of overseas travel, rather than any planning. ;)

I am very flexible and eclectic in my travels, and so depending on what opens up and where I will then see what then takes my fancy. For me too it is very much what I can do when I am at a destination and not just being able to get there and back.

Though unlike some on this forum cruising on a ship, or small ship, will not be part of any such planning for a long, long time. I am happy for others to be the guinea pigs for me ;)

The US was our October 2020 destination and even if international travel returned tomorrow I don’t think we would go there just yet.
We have tickets to/from SIN and providing they go ahead we would look at where we can go from there. If not then I’d look at cancelling the SIN flights and head to wherever is open, perhaps NZ or the SP?
If all else fails I can grovel to my boss to try and get my holidays cancelled and book extended holidays next year

But not open to Australians ?

At the moment, no; but hopefully a good sign that a lot of EU countries are starting to open within the region so international may not be too much further behind. I suppose time will tell.

I am planning to go to New York in June 2021
I’m ever the optimist ☺

I have mapped out a rough itinerary but it remains 'on paper' only.

I have a friend in rural Victoria whose wife booked an expensive holiday to Spain through a 'friend.' A refund request for the land content was refused - I assume through a travel agent - but they have a travel credit available until 2022, which for them - not for me - is a reasonably satisfactory outcome. I don't know what happened with their airfares, but inadvisedly they paid for far more up front in various components than they needed to. (Hindsight though is wonderful).

It's cautionary tales like this that deter me from starting to arrange airfares, while normally I don't book accommodation until three or four months out (or less) as provided one avoids absolute peak periods like when mainland Chinese are in New Year travelling mode, or hordes of USA visitors are in the UK/Europe in an August, from previous experience one can usually find reasonable accommodation without shelling out a year in advance.

Reports that some AirBnB properties have not refunded accommodation costs are a further reason not to book too far in advance.

It it mutual benefit - whilst you have us going to New Zealand, there will be NZers coming to Australia to spend. I understand that the number may be low at the moment, however I believe that is appropriate for us to leave the country and breathe some fresh air and to Asia to taste authentic Asian food rather than getting stuck here in Australia.

Trade is, as you say, an exchange of mutual benefit. A win-win!

We sell far more iron ore and coal to Asia than any 'deficit' in tourism earnings, so there's swings and roundabouts. IIRC, Oz still has a large current account surplus despite the dampener the virus has put on economic activity.

This time next year,I'm hoping to redo my Spain, Portugal & London trip in actuality not virtually. Really hoping I won't still be posting in the "Where would you be now thread" !!

Yes. We just cancelled our award flights for USA/Canada in December with the plan of pushing it back to December 2021.

Also still looking at hiking in California with BroName some time between July & September 2021. That one will be dependent on winning a permit though.
