Hydroxychloroquine - What Goes On?

I like watching Fox News.

Last Monday, on his radio show, Hannity interviewed a Doctor in a New York hotspot. Doctor said, he treated 350 patients of his and 150 in another area with hydroxychloroquine, antibiotics and zinc sulfate . At that time, he had had none going to hospital and none dead.

Next day Hannity had another New York doctor on who was also treating his patients with hydroxychloroquine - he was more coy about citing facts and figures, but said his results from using the anti-malaria drug on patients were positive.

On Saturday, Tucker Carlson had another doctor on describing the nightmare in New York hospitals. The Doctor then stated that he was using the anti-malaria drug as a prophylactic.

And New York Governor Cuomo was procuring 750,000 doses of the malaria drug chloroquine; 70,000 doses of its derivative, hydroxychloroquine; and 10,000 doses of the antibiotic Zithromax.

After President Trump expressed optimism over the results that French doctors had gotten with the drugs, and he had ordered the FDA to fast track testing of hydroxychloroquine, the Governors of Nevada and Michigan then passed orders preventing their doctors from using hydroxychloroquine on their patients,

These reports sort of raised a lot of questions to me like -
Would it not be a simple statistical test to see if, on contracting the virus, the population of people currently taking the drug for Lupus and arthritis have a significantly lower hospitalisation and death rate than the general population?

Would it not be a simple statistical test to compare the hundreds already treated with the drugs after contracting the virus, to an equivalent number of people who contracted the virus a few weeks prior who weren't treated?

What's up with those State Governors banning its use? and

Is the drug useless, or are New Yorkers and people here and in other countries now dying needlessly?

Then, on The Bolt Report tonight, he reported that New York health workers are now on the anti-malaria drug.
And that France and Italy now allows it to be used in some cases.
And that our health workers will be starting a trial in three weeks.

So, is this some kind of Right Wing Conspiracy in presenting the information above?
Or, does a partial cure fo rthe epidemic exist, but it doesn't work for the public ......but it is good for health workers? (Kind of reminds me of our Face Mask discussion)

Any thoughts?
Regards,
Renato

Trump said that the drugs in question did do what he claimed and were already approved by the FDA for said uses
Ah no he didnt
He said "maybe it works maybe it doesnt" but if faced with a patient about to die, you would try everything. Sounds reasonable if there is anecdotal evidence at the time.
Even medical marijuan_ is based on anecdotal evidence.

.

Depends which Trump statement you want to go with on which day. Talk about flapping around like a dunny door.

Just like his latest comments on injections with disinfectants. One day we should look at it and trial it (that would be one trial to not be in!) and the next it he states that he was just being sarcastic to journalists (And if even if he was not lying, which he was as he was clearly talking to his medical advisor, as if that would be prudent, or acceptable action by a leader in the middle of a pandemic to waste peoples time by such behaviour particularly when the lay public may have acted on his suggestion).

Exactly Trump never said it would work.

BTW Trump is not the first to suggest unconventional therapies. To this date no one had actually tried it - which suggests it was a media pile-on.

I would be more worried about the WHO director who said international travel should not be banned while China was in lockdown. Governments and media all believed WHO and some countries are currently paying a very high price for it .

And this is logical how? Poor advice is poor advice even if someone else said it first.

And unconventional is a generous term for such therapies.

Watch the video.

The rapid advice to not do it my many authorities including the CDC, makers of disinfectant, the media etc hopefully have prevented it.

I would be worried about all wrong advice.

I don't follow the logic of ignoring poor advice just because someone else also gave poor advice.

I read an article this morning that said the trial of hydroxychloroquine had been discontinued, as it had the unfortunate side effect of killing those who took part.

Way back in the 1979s when we took it for Malaria it was made quit clear that it was important to only take the prescribed amounts as there were potential side effects.

There are many trials. The ones discontinued had the dosage set much too high. In itself, like any drug, it is not dangerous unless an overdose is taken or given. I've been safely on hydroxychloroquine now for four years. Which is 400mg.

Well they have now :(

Well even the pro-Trump Fox News, promoted by the OP as being the source of best information on CV19 ( LOL) , has reported a spike in enquiries following Trump's interest in disinfectants to treat people for CV19.

NYC Poison Control Center saw 30 cases of exposure to Lysol, bleach & other cleaners in 18 hours after Trump’s suggestion disinfectant might be used to treat coronavirus

That’s more than double during same period in 2019, per health dept

Thankfully no hospitalizations or deaths

Who am I to argue with Fox News.....

BTW Trump is not the first to suggest unconventional therapies.

There is nothing wrong with Trump, or any leader, maintaining an open mind and suggesting all sorts of crazy alternatives - who knows one might just work. Best though to do that behind closed doors and not discuss it so openly until there is something promising. The trouble is people do take notice of a president's words, for better or for worse.

This is why best left to the experts and not promoters on news and current affairs shows (trouble is these days expert scientific opinions are often given same, or less, weighting as opinions of those who know nothing about the topic at hand). Whilst "the dose makes the poison" is not a difficult concept to grasp for the scientifically aware, there are lot of nuances around effiacy and toxicity that are difficult to communicate, and of course many people aren't that scientifically aware. For example, I'm sure most of us could safely consume bleach at extremely low concentrations (a few drops of bleach added to two litres of water will probably have no effect), but I also assume at the concentrations that are not likely to harm your human cells, they're also not likely to harm viruses inside the human body.

Renato,

I refer to your original post -

Would it not be a simple statistical test to compare the hundreds already treated with the drugs after contracting the virus, to an equivalent number of people who contracted the virus a few weeks prior who weren't treated?

Well here it is - A study from New York.
Gerelis et al. NEJM - "Observational Study of Hydroxychloroquine in Hospitalized Patients with Covid-19"
1446 patients.
No difference in intubation or death.
No signal from Azithromycin.

Maybe - Fox news is not the place to get medical information from.

So, is this some kind of Right Wing Conspiracy in presenting the information above?
You tell me. It would seem like the people interviewed are not reliable sources of information.
Luckily those of us who make decisions for others don't make these decisions lightly. We rely on evidence and not anecdote. Maybe you should do the same.

I couldn't agree more with you on the last statement...

Might be interesting to see the results where HCQ is administered as prophylaxis.
