Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Could you perhaps "guess" then what a 70,000 point charge is on the same day for the already purchased ticket/pnr?

Perhaps there might have been a Qantas flight in the booking. That could be upgraded. TBH I dunno how how JQ rewards price or how they appear on a statement. I've never redeemed one. Maybe they repriced the ticket from economy to business? Or bought a bundle. Qantas Frequent Flyer | Jetstar

The odd points amount seems weird for an upgrade - in my experience with QF these are a set point amount. And also it would be odd for a hacker to indulge in such things as repricing.

The whole thing seems very strange and I would personally love to understand more about it all - hence hoping someone will appear here who actually knows what the activity statement entries mean.

"Jetstar Extras" could be something like a limo ride booked through them, at least that's the most expensive ancillary I can think of off the top of my head. 70k points is still only around $490 at QF's usual conversion rate.

Luggage fees and other stuff of that ilk also get recorded as "Jetstar Extras".

Car hire is another possibility.

My guess is that this is exactly how the OP ended up getting shunted between QFFF and jetstar. The OP wanted to know what the activity was for, neither QFFF not Jetstar would know given the booking will have been well and truly archived. QFFF needs to request Jetstar to retrieve the booking.

interesting option but can these be paid via QFF points??

Yes. You can book a flight on jetstar.com, add car hire or a hotel or an airport transfer or whatever, and then log in on the payment page to use QFF points. As far as I know that would show up as two entries on a QFF Activity Statement equivalent to what we have here, with the car hire or hotel or whatever showing up as "EXTRAS".

Perhaps it's a bundle - such as a max (food/luggage/comfort pack & seat selection), odd amount would be the dynamic pricing for luggage JQ have? Maybe it's on Jetstar Asia/Japan? Hotel accommodation domestically?

Seems odd there is no resolution thus far - I hope the OP gets their points back.

Depending on status, is it worth politely telling QF you're thinking of status matching to VA?

My guess... it's a bundle made in one transaction but split by JQ/QF for the sake of the points conversion.

I'm still not clear where the notion that the ticket was in Business Class comes from - nothing I can see there indicates that (not that it really matters mind you).

it all seems a bit odd. to me.

Could it have been a family member or someone who knew the OP's credentials doing this rather than a "hacker"? It just seems like a really odd use of points.. of course without info of the booking made, route and of course all important pax info, how would anyone really know?

JQ flights and $8 ham and cheese sandwiches: The glamorous life of a modern day hacker... Wonder if they hacked into a bus company to get a free ride to the airport?

MEL_T, I agree with the assessment that this is clearly some sort of points+pay scenario. But I really would like us ("us" as in the wider AFF community) to look at this far more closely and see what we can come up with to assist the OP.

As I have said, I am not an expert in points redemptions QF-Jetstar. But this incident intrigues me. So I have a couple of observations and questions - if anyone can address one or more of them it would be appreciated:

(1) Question: The OP's activity statement clearly specifies two transactions, on the same date, and related to the same PNR. Can anyone absolutely confirm what each of these transactions mean? My take on the first is that an airfare was purchased, and that it included both QF and Jetstar legs. Do people agree?

(2) Question: It has been expressed that it is impossible to upgrade a Jetstar fare with QFF points. Is this true?

(3) Observation: As per MEL_T's thought, it would seem imprudent for a hacker to use their own credit card, so it would be "best practice" as a hacker to pay the entire fare with the stolen points. But the initial transaction was for just 37,000 odd points - this in my opinion for a points+pay option means the original fare only cost about $250, if it was paid for fully in points.

(4) Observation: IF the second transaction was for an upgrade to business (as is the opinion of the OP), the points used again would only discount about $500 cash. IF this could be done for an upgrade Y to J, this must be a very cheap and short international route, especially if the ticket is return.

(5) Observation (for the OP): A characteristic of points+pay tickets is that they are equivalent to a paid fare (as opposed to a "classic " points redemption). IF the hacker used this for a fare that earnt points, and adopted your husbands identity also (easy if it was just a domestic ticket) then there should be some earning of points later on in the activity statement relating to that PNR ("DEWCGM")

(6) Question (for all AFF members): Can anyone shed real light on the second transaction. IE what does the points deduction for "JETSTAR EXTRAS" actuall mean? Please do not guess here - someone should actually have seen such and truly know.

(7) Question (for OP): Why do you beleive that an upgrade occurred? Is this from experience/knowledge, or is it an (understandable) assumption due to the two activity entries? Or is it something communicated from one of the airlines in your contact so far?

In answer to Q5. There were no points early later on the activity statement relating to PNR (DEWCGM).

Q7. My husband believes an upgrade occurred because that was the detailed notation of the points transfer when he first saw the loss of points on the online Activity Statement. That detailed notation was no longer visible in subsequent revisits to the online Activity Statement.

Good News! My husband's points were returned to his account today! Thank you to the AFF Community for your interest and advice in this situation. It is a big relief for us to not have that loss hanging around in our thoughts. I will definitely keep all your observations in mind should we run into this situation in the future. Thanks again for your support!

Fantastic result idle1002!! Just sorry it took so much hardship and time to resolve. :)

good result.

I would, if I was your husband -

1. change PIN
2. check PC/laptop whatever for malware/viruses etc (it's still not known HOW the access was made - if there's a keylogger or something on a laptop or other device then you're still at risk)
3. Do a regular check of activity log (I am sure this has been going on for the past year! :) )

it may be over but you never know.

re points+pay (if that's what it was, which seems weird for a compromised account!) but if it was, the lack of earning activity means nothing - after all they simply would have changed the FF# to accrue to theirs (pretty stupid really - specially if a QFF# as that would make it easy for QF to trace - unless it also was a compromised account....) but I digress.

That's great. Well done for persisting. Were you given a result as to what had happened?
