OK tks - me neither but I don't go to Thailand

I have ING as well as Citi - I wanted to test it in May in China and June in Europe - and I have a Merchant facility just over my right should where I am sitting to type this - 5 x $0.01 transactions back to back takes care of the transaction rqts - then a simple $1K transfer seals the deal for usage - but in both April and May I forgot to do so until too late - Citi just upload 2 days before you travel and it's done. Such is life!

Yes pretty much every Thai bank ATM will charge you 180THB I think, unless you can find a Citi ATM. I actually thought many bank ATMs in the US also charged the operator fee, except those ATMs in the 7-11...can't remember, are they Citi branded?

Thailand is the only country (to date) that has levied an ATM operator fee on the Citi card … almost AU$10 in December 2018 :(
But as mentioned earlier, the FX rate via ATM is terrible. Much better to change AUD locally.

Crikey I have never selected Credit - only ever Savings - I thought that's what you had to do?

I still don't see how anybody can say ING is better than Citi - I thought I posted plenty evidence above to show line ball - and with Citi no need for that ridiculous 5 cleared transactions and $1,000 upload in month prior to intended use.
Not all ATMs will access Citi savings accounts, but any Visa branded ATM will access the Visa Debit by way of the Visa network. Hence its basically infallible in a Visa ATM.

Not exactly correct technically.

The Citi card previously issued was compatible with Visa and Plus and Star networks.
Even if the card wasn't a Visa debit card but just a normal cash card (remember those old days?), you could put the card into any ATM which was Plus compatible, which would also be processed by Visa as it's routed via Plus network (which is Visa). Plus network for cash, Visa network for credit purchase or cash advance.

Now that the card from Citi is changed to MasterCard, you can press credit to have it routed via MasterCard network, or press Savings Cheque which is to be processed by Cirrus network, just that Cirrus is also owned by MasterCard, so all right meah

Just digging into +1s Ing Orange account for the recent Vietnam ATM fees for withdrawals. All different ATMs belonging to different banks
1) VND 2,000,000 withdrawn. ATM fee VND 66,000 charged (=AUD $4.06 charged but refunded by Ing)
2) VND 250,000 withdrawn. ATM fee VND 55,000 charged!! (=AUD $3.38 charged but refunded by Ing)
3) VND 3,000,000 withdrawn. ATM fee VND 50,000 charged (=AUD $3.09 charged but refunded by Ing)
4) VND 3,000,000 withdrawn. ATM fee VND 99,000 charged!! (=AUD $6.12 charged but refunded by Ing)

As my citibank MC debit card didn't work again (3rd time in 3 different countries - tried different ATMs and tried pressing both credit and savings) I couldn't compare the exact Fx rate between Ing and Citibank but the refund of the ATM fees makes Ing much better than Citibank imo....I know not all OS ATMs charge a withdrawal fee but I find it is becoming increasingly common in a lot of countries especially at airports :(. In the past, i use to run around looking for a no fee charging ATM, but now I don't have to bother, REMEMBERING to deposit the $1000 into the Ing Orange the month before which is easy enough but the 5x Card transactions is a bit of PITA but I go to Woolworths / Coles self checkout and do split payment 5x to pay 5x $1...that seems to do the trick. All my OS trips are planned more than a month ahead....otherwise i guess you need to program a $1000 monthly deposit into you Ing account as well as make the 5x card transactions.

Interesting. I first got mine in 2008, and the instruction was always "select Credit" in the paperwork that came with the card.

Never had an issue with the Citi card. But the ING would win out in places with an ATM fee. Fiji, Thailand, most of Canada it's hard to find fee-free ATMs.
Some parts of the USA and esp Alaska too.

DBS and OCBC are now charging atm fees in Singapore too. For citibank card, We can avoid the fees by withdrawing from citi or uob atms

I know of Fiji too. There might be others?

Many, many others. There used to be a spreadsheet that tracked this, but someone seems to have overwritten the data and all the entries are gone.
Edit: strange.. all the data appears to be back now! It wasn't when I updated it in Egypt last week.

In recent times countries I've been to where I was charged a fee include India, Laos, Nepal. Egypt didn't charge me any fees using CIB bank.

Is there any reason on pay day you can't auto transfer 1k to the ING account then 1 day later transfer 1k back? Then just need the 5x transactions, which you could do at a supermarket self-checkout putting through 5 items 1 at a time......

As well as the countries mentioned above, you can add Burma and Uzbekistan.

The Whirlpool forum wiki on the 28 Degrees card has a pretty up-to-date list of countries where banks will charge a local ATM withdrawal fee.

Here is the link (scroll to bottom of page) to the Wiki listing which OS ATMs charge an ATM fee and how much:

My Orange ING card (applied Sunday evening) arrived today and will be my "Go To" card now for Overseas ATM cash withdrawals. Even in countries where there are ATMs which are fee free, it is a royal PITA to go looking for them...the convenience of using any OS ATM fee free with Ing Orange significantly outweighs the inconvenience of doing 5x card transactions and depositing $1000 the month before imho :)

I actually swapped my everyday account to ING just to make it easy. My salary ticks the money box and I just do 5 quick payments on my Optus bill on the first of each month
