And ensure your laptop doesn't crash whilst using it in flight
In a new twist, pax using laptops are being questioned.
Laptop probe in Qantas plunge
Q. So what were you doing with your laptop at the time of the incident?
A. I was tapping into the flight control systems and went crazy with my mouse.
Sounds like they are clutching at straws here!
Dear god - have you read the comments???
"Ban all electronic devices from aircraft". Are these people on drugs?
Posted by: Deborah, ALBURY, on 9/10/2008 1:09:04 PM If mobile phones can cause problems, what really makes them think that laptops are any safer? I agree with everyone else. BAN THEM and every electronic device. If people can't live without their laptop or mobile phone for an hour or so, then they should seek ELECTRONICS ANONYMOUS.
Yes I think Deborah needs to join the rest of the world in this current century. Maybe she wants us to ban watches and pace-makers too since both are electronic devices.
I'd sure love to be able to do a PER-SIN-LHR in "an hour or so"![]()
Captain is a close family friend of mine and I spoke to him yesterday. I am not going to print verbatim what happened however will say that he described a horrific event that no aircrew/passenger ever want to experience.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation is progressing.
The aircraft's Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and coughpit Voice Recorder (CVR) arrived in Canberra late on Wednesday evening. Downloading and preliminary analysis overnight has revealed good data from both recorders. Data from the FDR has been provided to Qantas, the French Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses (BEA) and Airbus as parties to the investigation.
While the full interpretation and analysis of the recorded data will take some time, preliminary review of the data indicates that after the aircraft climbed about 200 feet from its cruising level of 37,000 feet, the aircraft then pitched nose-down and descended about 650 feet in about 20 seconds, before returning to the cruising level. This was closely followed by a further nose-down pitch where the aircraft descended about 400 feet in about 16 seconds before returning once again to the cruising level.
Detailed review and analysis of FDR data is ongoing to assist in identifying the reasons for the events.
650ft in 20 secs or 32.5 ft a second does not sound like a lot to me. (Looking at the photo's it must be though.)
Far cry from the 10,000 ft reported though![]()
I think that is three times the normal descent rate (650 sounds about right for a minute of descent, but I am sure other more expert on aviation will correct me!)
At that rate, it would take 56.9 minutes to get to the ground from 37,000 ft. That seems like a long time to me.
And ban the IFE systems. And active noise cancelling headphones, and ....Yes I think Deborah needs to join the rest of the world in this current century. Maybe she wants us to ban watches and pace-makers too since both are electronic devices.
Plus some kids' games/toys also have wireless capability. It is not unusual to see children playing against each other wirelessly, while in the air.But one problem is that these days many laptops do include transmitting devices, including WiFi, Bluetooth and EVDO/GSM etc wireless transmitters ...

Fairfax are now reporting the compensation with the angle that "pointy end flyers get more compensation". They then advise how First (hehe) customers get vouchers worth ~$10K whereas Economy pax get vouchers for around $2K.
Gotta love integrity, correctness and honesty in journalism.
