Ethiopian 737 Max 8 crash and Fallout

So then why is the 737 Max grounded worldwide? i predict the end of Muilenburg 's tenure as CEO, and I think the 737 Max will never recover from this in the public's eye!

Boeing Signals Additional Software Problem Affecting 737 MAX Airliners

Boeing Co. on Monday said certain safety alerts on its 737 MAX jets didn’t operate as airlines would have anticipated because of a previously undisclosed error on its part.
Can't get at the full WSJ article without a subscription.

"The company's anti-stall software, called MCAS, was a common link in both crashes. It met Boeing's design and safety criteria, and adhered to certification protocols, Muilenburg told reporters following Boeing's annual shareholder meeting in Chicago."

If this is the case, then Boeings design and safety criteria, and the certification criteria are flawed and need to be fixed. And Boeing needs to stop hiding behind them.

I expect it’s from some lawyer’s playbook, in which you never admit responsibility, and always force the people you’ve harmed to go court.

But, I don’t know that I’d be claiming it was a design that passed all your safety standards, whilst blaming the pilots for failing to use a procedure that only incidentally might have worked. It tells me that their safety standards aren’t worth anything.

WSJ is certainly digging...
Boeing Co. BA +0.34% limited the role of its own pilots in the final stages of developing the 737 MAX flight-control system implicated in two fatal crashes, departing from a longstanding practice of seeking their detailed input, people familiar with the matter said.

As a result, Boeing test pilots and senior pilots involved in the MAX’s development didn’t receive detailed briefings about how fast or steeply the automated system known as MCAS could push down a plane’s nose, these people said. Nor were they informed that the system relied on a single sensor—rather than two—to verify the accuracy of incoming data about the angle of a plane’s nose, they added.

The 60 minutes program tonight did not portray Boeing in a +ve light...who would fly the 737 Max moving forwards regardless of what Beoeing and the FAA say?

Many people.
I will believe people are seriously considering their safety when they say NO 737 MAX and at the same time are prepared to walk to the airport.

Valid argument. But not necessarily the way consumers think. In part it's a difference between something people think they can control themselves, and something which could be out of their control.

I am not disagreeing that Boeing got it very wrong just that many people have short memories and also have no real idea of what a/c they are flying in. This might take a while but I really believe that things will return to 'normal' after a while and this whole episode will be forgotten by the general population.
Ask the average punter if they are flying in an A320 or a B737 and most will have no idea which type let alone between models of a particular type.

True. But alternatively people steadfastly refuse to fly Garuda because of perceived safety issues. Or anyone of half a dozen other carriers. Often one of the first questions people will ask when they get told of a cheap airfare is ‘but are they safe?’

Aviation is one of those peculiar things that people get ideas stuck in their head regardless of how irrational they might be (and that works both ways in aviation). Yet they will drive to the airport, speed when they drive, or hire motorcycles in Bali.
