Hilton (brand) returning to MEL

From FlyerTalk:

Hilton is expected to open a new hotel at 472 Bourke St, to be named Hilton Melbourne Little Queen Street. It's in a great central location right next to the Bourke St Mall precinct. This new opening will be in addition to the planned Hilton Melbourne Square situated in Southbank, with the Hilton group looking at aggressively expanding its operations in Melbourne. Currently only Doubletree by Hilton Flinders St is the sole representative for the group in Melbourne after the rebranding of the much loved Hilton South Wharf and Hilton on the Park hotels.

From what I heard this owner, if it’s the same one (Melbourne, Noumea, Auckland) is known to announce hotel openings within 3 months from completion. Burke St was talked about for a while, glad to see it coming.

I won't claim to know the first thing about planning approvals and regs. But "remove three hotel rooms from level 5" - really, that micro?

It was the setback that they fought which can lead to a structural redesign that would cost them money but setbacks are very common (pretty much the rule in Melbourne) and protect streets from being cavernous wind tunnels and aesthetically avoiding stunning heritage listed build overs being dominated by the new builds on top.

The developer probably was just being lazy / trying it on and hoping VCAT would just overrule in their favour, to be fair they normally side with the developer - but this time they’ve grown a spine and said no :)

It shouldn’t delay things too much and if it does it’s the developers fault :)

Around May 2020 is the expected opening :)

Just noticed it's now back to 1 October 2020.

Current Hilton sale has some very cheap (sub $140 some nights) at the DT Melb

Even though I have status with Hilton and I used to go out of my way to stay with them, I am fed up with their pricing over the past couple of years. When I can get far better hotels at similar (or lower) prices, why on earth would I stay at Hilton, and DT at that? I booked Pullman Sydney earlier this afternoon for a stay in a couple of weeks for $110, albeit this is special price for people associated with the Bushfire, such as SES, etc (I legitimately qualify). The point is when chains like Accor have these kind of specials, why would I even give an equivalent hotel such as Hilton Sydney (charging at least $300 per night) a second look??

I still stay at Hilton [Edited: Sunshine Gold] Coast any chance I get (because of their management and staff), but that is pretty much it. I (used to) like Hilton, but c'est la vie I guess...

I mostly agree with you but my work personality is at odds with my leisure personality.

Work - I honestly don’t care that most Hilton hotels are drab, ultra boring and dated. I literally don’t have time to care and because it’s work I also don’t care about the cost. I want convenience and familiarity so I can speed through all the mechanics of staying in a hotel and get in and out as quickly as humanly possible, whilst having some comfort and health.

Leisure - never stay in Hilton properties, they all have a hint of 1980’s beige and make me feel like I’m in mid west America where time has left everyone behind. Even their ‘cool’ concept brands are just try hard lame. I prefer smaller ‘real’ boutique one offs / small chains with life and individuality.

Not expecting much from this new Hilton but I’m sure will do the job for my corporate half :)

I am with you on leisure travel. For work travel, however, they are 99% of time priced just above the ATO’s per diem rate, which makes them inaccessible to me for work trips
