Hi,
I'm also getting the common "Select ‘Start over’ and choose alternative flights. (Error 15079 - 421)" message with my awards booking.
If I book this flight over the phone (and only if the phone charge fee is waived), how long does it take to appear on my online account under "manage bookings"?
(ie. for seat selection which I rather do online instead of over the phone with the agent)

It’s pretty quick. Usually have eticket in 10minutes or so.

Within seconds in my experience. Barely get off the phone, refresh my bookings and it’s there.

E-tickets can take longer. Keep an eye on that and follow-up if needed.

I rang Qantas yesterday around 9:15pm AEDT - it was a ~50 minute wait-time at that point, so I decided to try the "SMS" option and contact the airline that way. The agent was quite good and was able to respond to me within 30 mins.
After explaining my situation the agent looked up their computer and seemingly received the same problem I was having, as I was told that they were also unable to book the particular flights I was after on that particular date. The agents response was something along the lines of "we can only book what is available on the Qantas website - ie. if you can't do it at your end, we can't either".
The agent was certainly not as blunt as that in their response, however I wasn't convinced about that statement.
Perhaps the agent didn't quite understand my request over the SMS interaction, so I decided to ring the call centre again later in the night.
Around 11pm I was able to get put straight through to a call centre agent.

Their response turned out to be the same; that there was no availability on the day of my desired flights (despite the Qantas website still having these flights show up in the search results).

Is that it? Do I call another agent and see if they will have better luck, or do I need to wave the white flag and reluctantly choose the only other rewards flight available for my dates?

Is the fact that I am only a QFF bronze member, preventing me from having more options with these awards flights?

Have you checked to see if the flight is showing as available with another OneWorld operator, such as BA? If not available there, I would take it as a hard no. If availability is showing elsewhere, I'd probably try again.

Being at the bottom of the pecking order means less choice of award flights, yes. Basically we get what's left after higher status members with their earlier access.

Sign up for BA or AA and use their award search to see if availability is showing their also.

I find BA (British Air) pretty reliable for checking award availability. You do need to be a member though to search.

If you share the route and date, I'm happy to check for you.

Thank you, at first I was thinking there may have been a OneWorld website service where you enter your existing membership details to see reward flight availability across the alliance.
I now understand the need to join another airlines program to check for flights.

Thank you for your offer, however I will just consider reworking my itinerary as there are available flights for my preferred route the days before and after my desired date.

As separate legs:
BA shows 2 economy award seats available Feb 5, SAN-AKL. No business seats.
AKL-MEL Feb 7: economy yes, business no.
But SAN-MEL is showing "no availability".

American Airlines shows economy availability on yr preferred flights SAN-LAX-AKL with the connecting flight QF158 AKL-MEL at 7.15pm. That final leg might be yr problem.

If you want to check other days, try American Airlines. You don't have to be a member to check availability and searching SAN-MEL is returning options via AKL.

I greatly appreciate your time and effort.

I have tried changing to that 7:15pm flight ex AKL as part of a multi-city booking, however still no luck with QF metal unfortunately; although there is a Jetstar flight out of AKL which is allowing the booking to work through the Qantas website.
So yes, you seem to be on the money that its the AKL-MEL leg that is causing the booking issues.


I am not even going to try and understand the rhyme and reason behind how BA/AA/QF are showing up with different results for award seats on the same flights. Seemingly the entire awards booking concept isn't as straightforward as it could be. I gather this is something all experienced frequent flyers are already well aware of.

I'm having troubles logging to the Qantas website from my computer - I've tried a couple of browsers to no avail.

I was able to access via iPhone app to do Seat Selection - but when I try to "log in" via the app it wouldn't let me through.

Its T-25 to my flight to US and I'd like to do a meal selection - first world problems :)
