Yes, these smart TV remote type apps are very common and easy to use.

But in my view just because you CAN do something like this doesn't mean you SHOULD.

but this is half my point. in a public communal area it might be a minority of people who think this. Others may be happy and yet more probably couldn't care either way.

I don't feel unilateral action is always the most appropriate in such a situation. That's just me.

Or, let me pose this situation.. you're in your seat looking out the window. Pax behind you reaches over and shuts the shade without asking. Is that reasonable or appropriate?

If it needs closing then yes.

If the cricket is already on, then no need to change it.

I guess we'll disagree on this point then, because I would consider in that situation, just like changing a tv chanel without asking to be inappropriate and rude.

Depends on the situation, I have traveled at times when someone leaving their window shade up is inappropriate and rude..

is it just as inappropriate and rude as, for example, someone changing the news channel in a lounge to the footy without even an "Excuse me?"

do you see the point I'm trying to make? (windowshades are a very different argument and I know generate fury to some, I was just trying to find an example that is reasonably close in nature to the lounge/TV situation).

I don't think we're that mis-aligned. If someone is watching the telly I'd probably not even want to change. If they are just sitting in front but say reading the paper, then I'd ask if they mind. If there is no-one watching in particular then I'd just change it.

Sometimes the subtitles are more entertaining. I don't know who or what does some of the subtitles, but gee they can go wrong...

I believe it's generally some sort of Voice/Sound to text software.

OK except for the case where someone may be listening to the TV that you don't always know if they're actively watching or not.

the point is that isn't it good manners to ask the people in the area "Do you mind if we change the channel?" just as it wouyld be good manners to ask the person at the window "Would you mind closing the shade because ..." ?

that's my point.
