I can't find a link to post, but heard on the radio that COAG have decided on mandatory photo ID for domestic flights.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Here's an extract from an ABC News article on the subject:

Airline passengers could soon be forced to produce photo identification before boarding domestic flights in Australia, bringing security standards in line with those at international terminals.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and aviation security experts have long argued that identity checks are needed to prevent criminals and fugitives boarding flights under false names.

There have also been calls for liquid restrictions and full body scans.

While photo ID was once required for all domestic flights, most airlines now offer self-service kiosks and mobile check-in, meaning passengers never have to prove who they are.

The ABC understands the Federal Government is moving to close that gap and will announce the additional security measure before the end of the year.

You could soon need photo ID to board domestic flights

I wonder how this would be implemented? I hope it doesn't mean you will need a boarding pass to proceed through security (and to the lounge).

You have needed it on Rex for some time.We certainly had to have it on our Kangaroo Island trip.

I fear they may take the same view as US authorities, that only flying passengers will be able to access airside (and those lounges), to reduce these ID and security checks (assuming they are part of the same process) and the associated labour and infrastructure to only those actually travelling.

Is there a liquid ban also coming in?

Hopefully they'll do something high tech for frequent travellers that will use facial recognition as a form of ID in order to speed up the process.

Given there is only 1 security gate in Adelaide for every airline I think the meet and greet process has to go to avoid congestion if this is brought in.

What are the implications for children, infants and those without a form of photo identification?

Perhaps bite the bullet and introduce a national identity card? The Australia we know and love is starting to change. Not sure if it is for the better.

Surely, the ability to police fugitives will become dependent on the quality of the fake ID that criminals can procure (of course they won't do that because it is against the law.).

Why are people in government always so stupid?

ID has nothing at all to do with security.

More security theatre.

What a shame if it means friends and family members will no longer be able to come through security to farewell and welcome people.

There’s not many other countries in the world you can still do this.

The world moves on I guess.

Many years ago when working in the fraud area and the Australia card was mooted the law enforcement authorities said that it takes six months for new identity documentation to be successfully copied to the extent you can't tell the difference from a genuine document.

Probably less than that, these days.

Every time I check in at the desk Im asked for my license so same old, same old for me.

If you hand over your FF card at the start of the interaction it's very unlikely you'll be asked for photo ID.
