Mandatory Photo ID for Domestic Air Travel? [Not mandatory but can be requested]

You know, most of us have our passport details recorded by the international airline we give our loyalty. In my case Qantas,

So why not issue my Qantas card of appropriate status with my photo?

It already has my name and membership number on it.
I really don't need another card forcing me to see my ugly unwanted face on it.

1. Cost (which will ultimately be passed on as increased fees for membership/annual renewal)

2. The usual privacy concerns et al

3. Not every pax is a member of a loyalty program, shocking as that is to AFF members.

True enough, this was in response to a query of someone asking why their QF card can't have their photo on it.

Understood that other pax don't have a loyalty membership - therefore they would need to show government issued photo ID

Simply what already happens for international. Once upon a time international meet and greet was also right up to the gates: sad when that changed but we got over it. One big difference - and downside - of course will be flyers with a farewell crowd likely delaying through security. Messy. As for photo id, bring it on as an alternative to driver's licence: I know non-drivers who keep up their driver's licence purely for id convenience. Would hate to see some of them behind the wheel!

Understood. I was adding to your two (good) points but also linking that suggestion (QF card as ID) back to mandatory photo ID.

Canberra Airport to trial 'contactless' border for international travellers - The Canberra Times

Canberra Airport is set to become the first in Australia to trial new "contactless" border technology that scans faces instead of passports.

Trials of the new SmartGate technology are expected to begin in Canberra in March next year, ahead of a planned rollout across the rest of Australia.

"The SmartGates will allow, in time, people to walk through them with their passport in the pocket but without having to present it."

More than 100 new SmartGates will be installed at airports across Australia through 2018 and 2019 following the Canberra trial.

The government aims to have 90 per cent of passengers travelling through the new SmartGates by 2020.

According to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the gates could cut passenger processing time from one minute to as little as 15 seconds.

Although travellers would not have to produce their passports as they entered the gates, they would still need them to travel.

I wonder when my FF card will have a photo on it ?

I'd bet never. It would be impractical and expensive given the millions of members plus yearly renewal of cards.

And it would serve no purpose since if the airline wants to see photo ID for any reason they can simply ask you to produce one of the many official forms of photo ID.

Plus there's a push from some airlines/alliances to get rid of the physical cards altogether. OZ haven't sent me a card for at least 3 years. Basically will only do so by request. Most *A lounges will just look at/scan the boarding pass for the status info before letting one in. No card required.

Everything is going digital, my collection of photo albums hasn’t grown since the invention of the digital camera, there seems to be an iPhone app for just about everything, and I wonder how long it will be before drivers licences, passports et al disappear into the virtual world. I also st feel cheated!
All we need is for a power outage or software collapse and everything grinds to a halt.
I guess I’m a Luddite at heart, although I try not to be, I enjoy the simple pleasures in life , like still using a fountain pen, having a watch which doesn’t require winding , but doesn’t have a battery. I sometimes think that the rapid pace of change in this digital world is a disaster waiting to happen, let’s see how.bitcoin fares !

Singapore's Changi Airport tests facial recognition technology to find late passengers delaying flights - Traveller.com.au

"We have lots of reports of lost passengers... so one possible use case we can think of is, we need to detect and find people who are on the flight. Of course, with permission from the airlines," Lee said.

Chinese firm Yitu, which recently opened its first international office in Singapore, told Reuters it was in discussions with Changi Airport Group. Yitu says its facial recognition platform is capable of identifying more than 1.8 billion faces in less than three seconds.

Changi's newest terminal, T4, already uses facial recognition technology to offer self-service options at check-in, bag drop, immigration and boarding.

The technology means there are fewer queues and fewer visible airport or security staff.

Luggage is dropped at unmanned booths that take your photo and match it against your passport. You are snapped again at an automated security gate at immigration - a picture that is used to verify your identity at the boarding gate.

Changi is exploring how facial recognition can be implemented in its three older terminals for automated bag drop and immigration.

The airport sees T4 as a test bed for its fifth terminal, which will be up and running in about a decade.

"Today you take passport, you show your face and you show your boarding pass," said Lee, adding it may, however, be possible to use biometrics instead.

"Then actually in the future, you just take your face. You don't need your passport," he said.

Note to self: don't forget to take face :)
