Qantas Inbound lounge use

I don't recall Gold-level members ever having access to a lounge after flying, unless there's a dedicated arrivals lounge (such as that at Heathrow), although Platinum-level members can. See https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/tier-benefitsOccasionally, I've been able to sweet talk my way into the Sydney QC lounge, but like many other lounge-related matters, it often depends on the discretion of the staff at reception!

Don't ask questions, just look like you are going to check-in at the internal desk. If asked, tell them that's what you are going to do. Never been a problem for me. NOT that I do it that often now.

The Gold member in that article is not entitled to lounge access on arrival, and never was. Only Platinum and above are entitled to arrivals lounge access.

How is this news??? :-|

The media really needs to stop giving credence to these unnamed sources spitting the dummy after not getting something they are not entitled to.

Perhaps the anonymous flyer was previously Platinum and didn't realise there really is a difference between the two levels. Regardless, if this is a story I think even I could become a journalist as there's been no fact checking whatsoever. A simple read about the demise of ATA here would reveal when arrivals access became a thing!

I've managed to score a few invites into lounges post flights even as just a QP member. I went up and was polite and simply said I have a meeting to go to, would they mind if I went in and had a shower first. Never been knocked back, but I never had an air of entitlement about the way I approached it.

I think like a lot of things with travel YMMV, yes sometimes airline staff are having a bad day and thus will say "no" as a matter of course, other times how a situation pans out is entirely on how you approach the situation.

Never give those with little power the opportunity to legitimately exercise their limited power against you because they will do so with real malicious glee!

Looking forward to reaching WP. Hopefully the arrivals lounge access is still there by then.

I'm pretty sure that WP arrivals access is domestic only. I've been knocked back at eg SIN.

Yes it is domestic only unless there's a lounge just for arrivals that one is specifically allowed to use I think.

As shoddy as the 'journalism' is Qantas and Virgin will now have to be consistent on allowing access.

I predict that a 100% card scanning regime will soon be in place and those people who post here about getting access when not allowed as per the T&Cs will be very unhappy.

Still, it should help alleviate those overcrowding issues we keep hearing about.

No it won't, a lounge angel / dragon will always have a say in whom they let in and whom they don't. Not every one in the QP / J Lounge is a member of a FF program or even flying in a premium seat. Airlines will sometimes provide access as an apology or goodwill gesture, and would in that case have the discretion on letting people in without scanning a card first.
Nothing says they can't extend this discretion to other pax.

Why change the status quo (this is a general statement about QF and VA and consistency, not this particular issue :) )

I mean just because one does one thing doesn't mean the other has to, or will... though in the case of something like lounge access being abused/misused which equals $$$ to the bean counters, if this keeps being pushed and made an issue I suspect the end result will be similar.

Though it will probably be easier for QF to just stop WP+ from having arrivals access. Cue JohnK for a "Golden" comment :D

This older gent would beg to differ.

Until the mid 90's even QP had same day access.

Top level gold continued to have this until several program changes to around the turn of the century devolved that with the introduction of WP. (This was undocumented until the latter 00's.)

Not sure, but online there is (strangely) no comments function.

By consistent I meant enforcing existing rules not aligning them between airlines.
When discretion is allowed then inconsistency rules.

Also with people posting about gaining admission when not entitled then there is an even greater incentive for airlines to have a strict scanning policy with no exceptions.
