Just caught up with several pages since our last reliable internet. With weight loss in the short term diet is far better than exercise but in the long term exercise is essential for maintenance of weight loss. The CDC suggests for those who maintain weight loss over 90% have regular exercise as part of their plan.

Another thing with exercise-weight loss is not the only benefit.most disease are less prevalent in those who exercise regularly.
I have been eating <2000 calories a day for 3 weeks now. I have lost 8-9kgs since you last saw me in BKK. The only exercise I get is golf 2 days/week and walking to/from station.

Going forward I don't see myself doing additional exercise. I can't. I suffer enough walking at golf. The last time I lost a lot of weight it took 2 years to put back ~8-10kgs but I was still drinking. Cut down alcohol and continue to eat light should keep the kilos off.

My first target was 115kg. Almost there. Now to try and get under 110kg by October. Might surprise myself.

Great work JohnK. Can you think of anything you are doing that is radically different as previously you have said you had eaten healthily.

I went back through my old spreadsheets from 2009. I was eating healthy but still eating too much. And drinking too much alcohol on weekends.

Once you start weighing things again you realise that smaller portions are more than enough. Yesterday for example I only had ~1200 calories and that included ~60gms ice cream (3 tablespoons ~146 calories) as a reward.

My breakfasts consist of yoghurt and/or small dinner roll with some ham/salami cheese. Lunch is ham/cheese without bread made up of 3-4 bite size portions and 2-3 portions of fruit depending on how long I am at work. I try to keep breakfast/lunch between 650-800 calories combined which leaves me a huge buffer for dinner in case I start to snack a lot.

Dinner is usually ~300gms lamb/pork or boiled fish with either tomato/lettuce salad or boiled vegetables. Snacks are simple, 14gms feta cheese is ~37 calories, 7 medium olives are ~35 calories, 22 grapes are ~60 calories and maybe some pretzels/chips. And that is pretty much dinner sorted at ~700-800 calories.

Still feels like I am starving but I have to get this weight off first.

I'll agree with that; I think weve lost sight of what a healthy serving size should be. Everything these days is upsized. I've just bought myself some electronic scales and surprised to find the serving sizes of some things arent what I think they are. Even eating healthy food will put on weight if you eat too much of it...

Agreed. The juice bars are one of the traps - most drinks having four or five 'sugary' fruits squeezed into 1 glass! Huge number of calories without the benefit of the fibre of the pulp. Most might just add the toast, cereal etc thinking it was healthy.

The wife swore at me yesterday. She said "I'd like to go business class too. Hahaha." Hmmm....

Did she say the second part? My wife says: "I'd like to go business class too. But we can't. We're going economy."

Apart from possible adverse effect on heart high activity running may cause problems to joints from impact.

Dead right. After an arthroscope on my right knee, my orthopedic surgeon advised me not to run at the gym (or anywhere else) any more

Most dietitians will tell you only two serves of fruit per day - this is mainly because of the fructose (fruit sugars).

No. I said that. Hahaha. ;)

She was responding when I told her I was doing surveys and saving the miles to travel business class.

Once you lose the weight, it will be easier to do some exercise.

If I do jog, only on grass.

LOL. Careful, it's a slippery slope when people fly BC. MrsTMA flew BC (Malaysian) first in about 1995 as I remember. When we met her at LHR, the first words of greeting were not "Oh how lovely to see you.", but "I'm never flying in the back again.". Unfortunately she now even refuses to turn right on EK flights! :)

But the old adage applies, HWHL so one can't complain (much).

Struggling to walk is not because of the weight. It's because of the damage done to the body by inflammation, arthritis and disc/joint degeneration.

Quite happy for walking at golf and walking as part of everyday life to be my only form of exercise and. I'll try to refrain from using a cart for as long as possible. ;)

Against my better judgement I am off to the comedy festival again this evening.

It's rarely funny, but it gets me out of the house.

Not having a good run to put it mildly. My dads twin brother just announced he has got (metastatic) terminal cancer and given us chapter and verse (report/results on his scan) - non operable and has probably has 12 months (6 months before he will need palliative care). Looks like I'll be making plenty of trips to Noosa over the next year. Anybody an oncologist here who can explain (off-line) the report?

Bloody hell, I HATE CANCER :evil::evil::evil::evil:
I am sorry to hear that, QF WP. This is becoming quite the annus horribilis for you.

Discussion about the cost of flu shots a few pages back. A friend has just developed shingles and is in a very bad way. I think I am in the highly likely to develop it category, as I have had chickenpox twice, once as a kid and again at 23. But the injection is $250......does anyone know if it is available anywhere except at the GP? At that price I'm not going to bother, And being a pensioner, do I get an OFD (old fart) discount??
Speaking of shots, yellow fever and typhoid boxes now ticked on my record card. I asked the doctor if there was a prize for 'collecting the set'. I think his answer was along the lines of not getting sick when travelling! :)
