Sorry to disagree with you JohnK but if you go to a foreign country and commit offenses including assault and abduction, then you deserve to face the full penalties of the law in that country as well. One can perhaps understand the actions of mother, even though she has a new husband and child, but not the others. They should go away for a good period of time, IMHO. Of course one would think the CH9 people will get away with it after Foreign Affairs gets involved. The "mercenaries" not I hope.
Not disagreeing with you but unless you are in that situation you won't know how to react.

Personally I don't know all the story but there is no way I would sit back and respect the decisions of a religious court in Lebanon. Maybe you would. I guess we are different.

And I am sure you are aware of how family court works in Australia? Absolute morons? My best friends daughters boyfriend kidnapped my friends grandchild. They were not apart. Had been apart and he had access to the child that day and his mother helped him kidnap the child. Lovely. There were no custody orders in place at the time so the court has granted him temporary custody until the hearing. His daughter can only see her son on a Monday with my friend supervising and they have been warned not to kidnap the child as that would work against them. Justice hey?

And maybe citizens of Lebanon feel the same about Australian laws? Why not give them the same option.

And if people don't want to personally be seen to debate this issue then maybe don't post? I think the discussion on all viewpoints has been respectful of others's positions.

Most of us, fortunately, are and will not be in that situation but overriding all is that one cannot go to a foreign country and ignore or abuse the laws of that country. Otherwise we are falling back to imperialism and colonialism behaviour not mention religious or racial issues. One may not like it but chaos results if you believe you are above the laws of a given country because if your specific beliefs or national character.

I would suggest the judges of the Family Court of Australia would be far from morons. Rather, some of the better legal minds in the country.

Courts can be limited by overriding legislation. If that's the case, it's not the fault of the court, but rather us, the people who elected the politicians.

Packing for Melbourne tomorrow. Looks like I am reduced to HLO. The wife is making the most of her 23kgs, and has pretty much used my 23kg for BabyGM.
Better cram some stuff into the portacot.

The return trip should be interesting. Planning to grab a few dinosaur themed goodies from Melbourne Museum, so she may have to jettison some boots or something.

Discussion about the cost of flu shots a few pages back. A friend has just developed shingles and is in a very bad way. I think I am in the highly likely to develop it category, as I have had chickenpox twice, once as a kid and again at 23. But the injection is $250......does anyone know if it is available anywhere except at the GP? At that price I'm not going to bother, And being a pensioner, do I get an OFD (old fart) discount??

That had been my fall back position - but my friend is in absolute agony and tells me it would be worth the $250 not to feel as wretched as she does

Shingles immunisation can be sourced via script from any pharmac_. You can google the chemist warehouse price via a search for zostavax.
IIRC around 170 ish.

Early antiviral treatment doesn't always help much. I think the latest studies show the incidence of long term pain is not reduced either. Would have to double check.

Thanks, I'll check that out. FYI I do get cold sores, so I assume that's all associated.

If your on the old age pension, you can ask centrelink for an advance of $500 for emergencies.

I wasn't questioning your right to take your stance. Far from it. People take desperate measures when a difficult situation arises regardless of whether we judge them rightly or wrongly.

And others have done far worse and we excuse them. Not to be.

Check in ddrron. Hope you are nowhere near the earthquake. Not sure where you are up to on the trip.

Edit: just saw your view from the office post and know now you are well away from the area.

Glad I checked my computer when I woke up this morning.

My first meeting was cancelled, therefore I could "lie in" a bit longer.

Good to hear you are both well away. Nagasaki was comparatively close to the quake although across water so I would think it probably felt the quake. Hope you are enjoying the last of the cherry blossoms.
