Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Did another round of BWS & found a very good price on the 2012 Wolf Blass Grey Label Cab Shiraz. The price tag said $31.50 which I thought was ok for a single so thought I'd grab one, however it scanned at $22.50. Needless to say I made a quick run to the back of the shop to grab another couple!

Also noted some Barwang Hilltops down to $10.

That sounds about right. Danny's have the $180 for 6 with a Black Label thrown in.

Thanks for the link. Know nothing of this wine! Would you recommend? 14% alc. Cellar for 2-5 years?

It's Misha's so probably, but haven't tasted this particular example.

Tempted to grab some myself.

You lot are lucky. Our local BWS NEVER has anything close to this good of a deal

So chaps, can you go downmarket for a mo and give me some advice. Due to health issues MrMac can no longer drink alcohol of any description (so much for the giant wine fridge in the garage which is full of treasures) I have a designated driver which is good, but a grumpy husband who looks askance when I have a second glass!! I prefer whites but don't drink every night:D So I have been pouring out plenty of half bottles which seems such a waste. I am seriously thinking of trying a wine cask......however as it's been about 50 years since I had to drink the stuff I've no idea what's poison and what might be quaffable. Sauv blanc is my preference. Any ideas or suggestions please

Nor does mine! Checked today and they had WB Grey label Shiraz for its usual price of over $40. I have bought two for $60 once there though.

I hear your plight MrsMacs. Sad times. Alas, there is a season for fancy wine fringes stocked with fine wines, and there is a season for SBs in a cask.

There was an interesting discussion on the vinomofo thread on keeping opened wines a few weeks back. Most of the contributors were very good at polishing off their wine, either as they had big drinking boots or a loved one to help. But like you I am a lone drinker (my wife doesn't drink). So I did pay some attention to all the useful tips.

I mostly drink good reds, which will last more than one evening, but I did pick up one new trick from my fellow Fo blog friends that might be useful to pass on to you - use 375mm bottles.

It makes sense - if you drink 3 glasses a night, you then pour the rest into a smaller bottle for the next night, and slow down the oxidisation process to keep the wine drinkable for the next night. I thought it was a great idea, but have no idea if it works for SB.

Your alternative is the cask wines if you are a SB only drinker, and from a few reviews I have read, you can get your good easy drinking SBs in cask form. I have no idea which ones, as I seem to have been bitten by the fine red wine bug, but I am pretty sure some googling will give you the solution you are looking for.

Otherwise, you will have to switch to the red side like Sedimental ...!!

Having a dry period as I languish in The San hospital following an unexpected scary event on Friday. I still have my reds to look forward to when I get out...not passing them on just yet. ;)

edit: Got a message yesterday saying Dans have a box of shiraz ready to collect. It will be a little older when I collect it.

Thanks Wozza. Let me assure you the number and quality of reds MrMac has in said wine fridge and the potential for their snaffling by me or worse, the offspring, just might lead to another heart attack!! I'll try the decanting to smaller bottle idea. Thanks

Sorry to hear MrMac is off the grog. When we open up a bottle of SB (Oyster Bay Sav Blac is the go to wine.) for my SIL that doesn't like Reds, I'm usually left with half a bottle, so if we haven't finished it off within the next few nights, it usually goes into my cooking ... I poach chicken in the wine with some thyme and garlic and it's awesome in a warm salad.
If you have to go cask wine ... go the 2L varieties, which I find store better in the fridge. Banrock Station or Yalumba are the one's I've had in the past.

And on another note, get well soon prozac.
