Is Qantas losing its gloss?

If the QFF program is so succesful, and this subsidizes my usually excellent experiences in QFi travel, then I am selfishly happy :)

How come when the Australian Dollar was high it caused an increase in fuel price hence fuel taxes etc had to increase. Now the Australian Dollar has dropped it still means an increase in Fuel cost but offset by the drop in Oil Prices.

How can this be High Dollar Fuel Increases - Low Dollar Fuel Increases

Seems like Cake and Eat it to me

Oh and does this mean that redemption costs on classic awards should now drop too given the taxes are supposed to cover the higher cost of fuel?

Ansett, depends on their fuel hedging strategies over the two periods in question. Sounds like in the current period they forecast the AUD to fall against the USD and have been unhedged (to their advantage).

The weaker currency now means that it is costing them more to purchase fuel (presumably sold in USD); however as the USD price for fuel has been falling, the overall fall in the price is a greater offset than the rise in the currency - so they are ahead.

Should remain that way for a while, or even get better (as the AUD should fall further against the USD).

My Point is Prices rise as Dollar Rises and Prices rise as Dollars fall. The cost of Oil was high over several years and as the dollar rose this should have meant lower prices yet it was used as an excuse to increase prices.

I understand hedging but seriously are we now saying that prices rose when the dollar rose because QF stuffed its hedging?

What excuse will they come up with next to increase fuel levies and thus the cost of flying?

Sad indictment of the move by pax to the LCC's and of course this is hurting QF.

From an economic viewpoint, doesn't look like the turn around is anytime soon, so the red numbers from INTL will continue.

Feel for Simon Hickey...

Impressive numbers based on like for like comparison. Looks like the worm will turn for Mr Hickey - leaving aside the fact that QFi is reducing...

Okay, a couple of days later, one release of quarterly financial data and I feel a little less sorry for Simon. How to make a big company smaller...

I would still ultimately prefer fly QF than VA, I've given VA a pretty good go and they are let's say, 'good from far but far from good' to quote an old adage. The QF gloss is diminished but the brand is so strong. Goodness knows the company leadership has done almost everything humanly possible to trash the brand and destroy the airline over the past decade but still it survives. It needs some major reworking though to get that old shine back.

Poor turnout at the AGM yesterday. Guess everyone thinks it is a lost cause.

The leprechaun basically thumbed his nose to everyone. As far as he's concerned, people can say what they like. He couldn't give a damn. He's on a good wicket and he knows it. Practically untouchable now.

I will say it again, why do people need to refer to AJ by his origins? He is the CEO of the Qantas group, not a leprechaun, not the little Irish man etc...

Quite right, some would find this use of language or mocking offensive and 18c was not repealed!

I have said it before, and I say it again. "To get away from the Asian Fox, Qantas got on the back of the Middle Eastern Crocodile". The only thing protecting Qantas is the Politicians in Canberra.
The wife and I go back to UK twice a year, and we do no even consider Qantas, as it is far to expensive. We us RB, CE, or CS in J class.
If Qantas was a more reasonable price we would us them.

Whilst I agree it is not the right thing to do, it probably reflects the same contempt some of us have for him, as he has for us as customers of his airline, and frequent flyer scheme.

However, I take your point, and will try to refrain from referring to him in such terms.

Why not, it's a humor thing and we all like differnt humor. If he behaved differently he might get a bit more respect. But it is done in humor.

I wish people weren't all so sensitive about such things. When I was a kid I had a gollywog!

Matt
PS, he is the CEO of QF but also IS a little Irish man. Fact.

By referring to AJ as a Leprechaun, you are playing the man not his performance.

That is not humour last time I checked.

And yes I have copped wog many time in my life. Just because I tolerate it doesn't make it right to label someone else by their race, that is what people forget about racism.

Has AJ taken out Australian Citizenship, does anyone know?
In the past, all of the CEOs of QF were Australian Citizens when they got the job I believe AJ is the first one to be from overseas.
I have been called Chinkchong, and many other things, so I too know how it feels to be harassed, or be smacked/punched.
