The point remains direct does not imply a stop. Direct may or may not include a stop. For example SYD-MEL, SYD-LHR.

A stop is communicated by the use of the term non-stop.

If we look at the press release there is a route map that shows routes that are both non-stop and with a stop.

Correct. You'll notice my comment was in response to someone who said that Direct=Non-stop which we know isn't 100% true. Direct can be non-stop bit it doesn't mean that it is. Direct just means that there is one flight number between two destinations with however many intermediate stops the airline deems necessary.

I quoted all posts as they seemed to be at crossed purposes. They were also responding to someone who said that direct implies a stop. I just wanted to clearly state that direct can be both non-stop and with a stop, something that hadn't really been mentioned.

If it doesn't open a can of worms it might be worth noting there are no direct with a stop options in the press release.

Correct again ;)

So, what's the chances of the non-frequent flyer working out that "direct" doesn't always result in a non-stop flight? Next to zero, maybe.

Anyway, a 747ER can do this route non-stop, can't it? So it seems it would be a direct non-stop flight.

I would hope most consumers are fairly switched on these days - if an airline is going to fly non-stop they generally say so, and 'direct' probably means you should take a look behind the marketing and see where you're going to be stopping and for how long.

Qantas does however like to use the term 'direct' as seen in their press release for the introduction of A380 services to DFW:

The additional range of the A380 over the B747 is replaces on the Dallas route will see the return service operate direct to Sydney rather than via Brisbane.
In fact the service from DFW was direct to Sydney via BNE anyway. Now it will be non-stop.

Qantas submitted their Canada capacity application to IASC today. The application requests 1092 seats/week for 5 years to be "fully utilised" by 31 March 2015. Able to be used by any wholly owned subsidary of the Qantas Group.
http://www.iasc.gov.au/applications/files/4920.pdf

Current capacity available under the Australia-Canada bilateal allows 3000 seats/week each way with 5th freedom rights from HNL, SFO, Fiji and Tahiti.

I wonder why they are asking for it for 5 years when this seasonal service is only 2,184 seats over 4 weeks.
Maybe they are planning a 787 or A330 service via HNL by either QF or JQ at some point next year?

Interesting application to say the least.

Will watch this with keen interest.

More news to follow early next year I suspect.

PER-HKG even?

A bit OT for this thread but I've often thought that PER-MLE with connecting flights from ADL, BNE, SYD and MEL could be a good one. The Maldives is a popular destination and currently involves a trip via HKG, SIN and/or CMB.

Does the application cover QF marketed flights operated by codeshare partner or just QF operated flights? If the former the application would be easily explained by the West Jet codeshares.

codeshares appear to be a different part of the Australia-Canada agreement.
REGISTER OF AVAILABLE CAPACITY

AVAILABLE CAPACITY:
PASSENGER AND FREIGHT-ONLY SERVICES*
3000 seats per week in each direction.*
Note: * Designated airlines may operate freight-only services. The freight capacity
will be operated from within the passenger entitlement. Each 10 tonnes or part
thereof of freight capacity operated will be rated as the equivalent of 40 seats.
Freight capacity may be freely converted back into use as passenger capacity at
any time.
This capacity may be operated via Fiji, Tahiti, Honolulu and/or San Francisco.
Designated airlines may exercise full fifth-freedom traffic rights at these points
within the above entitlements.
COOPERATIVE MARKETING ARRANGEMENTS
The designated airline(s) of Australia may enter into cooperative arrangements for the
purpose of code sharing on flights operated by airline(s) of Australia, or Canada and/or
of any third country. Further information about the conditions applying to such
arrangements can be obtained from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development and Local Government.
Full fifth freedom traffic rights may be exercised at Honolulu, Fiji, Tahiti and San
Francisco by the designated airline(s) of Australia, where code share services are
offered on the flights of the designated airline(s) of Canada, subject to a total of 1660
seats per week in each direction.
It looks like QF could sell upto 1660 seats on WS each week and that won't touch the up to 3000 seats QF could be allowed to sell on it's own flights.

That is PER-AKL not PER-SIN and I think the reference to PER-SIN was the seasonal flights they added after the official end of the regular service.

Obviously the link is PER-AKL, however read this quote
“This is part of our strategy to become more dynamic and flexible in response to market opportunities. We’ve similarly announced seasonal services between Perth and Singapore to cater for the July school holidays, and we’ll look at other opportunities down the track,” added Mr Hickey.

Does that not suggest that QF see the PER-SIN as a seasonal route and will continue to do so as necessary?

Is that not what I posted in post #11?

Untill I see an announcement from QF I will believe what I see!
