Air Canada fly this route daily year round so the Qantas effort is a bit lame isn't it?
MIB is it just they way I read your posts or indeed are all of you posts just totally negative? Would you be happier if Qantas closed down completely?

My posts are focussed on constructive outcomes and sometimes hi-lighting what I see as negative ones. I think QF needs to re-focus on serious strategy it is a company that is in serious trouble. The 6 flights to Vancouver will probably lose money and strategically it won't go anywhere because it's highly unlikely that QF can be competitive into YVR with a regular service. They don't have the right aircraft and they don't have Oneworld connections in Canada. So it's a feel good good exercise for no return.

I have seen suggestions posted that Qantas possibly have some YVR based charter services operating around that time.

Just seems to me QF are getting kicked to death by all and sundry for cancelling routes - they put on a new route and you sink the slipper in again - seems they can't win.

I agree about the lack of OneWorld connections, but they are now code sharing with WestJet, which will help things a good deal, especially coupled with code shares with Alaskan.

As I've noted above if Air New Zealand can fly to Vancouver (presumably profitably?) as well as AC, year round, surely Qantas can? If Qantas flew there regularly, they would definitely take custom from both Air Canada and Air NZ (including me, about 5 times a year :) ). Further, Air Canada usually have TWO daily services over our summer (Canadian winter) so methinks there is room for Qantas to cherry pick in January.

Aircraft availability is another matter of course.

NZ has 777's and I believe code share with AC, both being *alliance makes a big difference.

There may be room for QF but with their structure, no Oneworld connections and having to run 744's it's hard to see it being a goer. Once the 744's go they have no available alternative aircraft capable so the route would be relatively short lived anyway.

Dunno about being AC code share, but NZ is a direct AKL-YVR flight 3 times weekly. And to be honest, I would have thought that both ANZ and AC being Star Alliance would mean they are competing for the same Star Alliance non carrier specific pax (ie United FF ers) - but this probably small, I'll grant you. QF flying to YVR would almost certainly garner all OneWorld pax headed anywhere in Canada, who at present either go AC or ANZ, or trundle off via LAX. Via YVR they can continue across Canada on a QF flight number on Westjet (when the full range of code shares are implemented).

I agree (again) about aircraft limitations - but if QF are ever to expand their long haul network again, they are going to have to start somewhere, with aircraft acquired somehow.

Goodness knows I've bagged QF enough lately, but this is a hint of turning the corner route-wise and I'm really encouraged. Not sure if going through the hassle to line up those code shares through the regulators would have been worth it for just the January flights (if I fly AC to YVR going forward, I'm not going to switch over the Westjet to YYC and eastwards just to get a few QFF points).

Only way they could screw it up (and I don't put it past them) is to somehow combine with the DeathStar flights to HNL.

the CP site
Please use "CX", "Cathay" or "Cathay Pacific". As already mentioned, using "CP" makes people think Canadian Pacific, a founding member of oneworld which went out of business and was absorbed into Air Canada.

Fudge .. forgive me for not understanding the correct acronym for CP
