Your chance to upgrade to Business with Qantas

how long does it usually take for a request to be approved/denied? never applied before.

The request doesn't start to be processed until the days before your flight (unless you are CL/WP1/perhaps WP). You will often be advised of the success or failure of your request at or by the time you check in at the airport (again, depends on status and flight loads).

I booked I class business and it has never let me submit an upgrade for first however now it does.

But at the moment I'm only Silver with QF and my traveling buddy is QF Gold. Now as we are "First Cousins" I want to submit the upgrade.

My question though, if I am Silver and I will be gold by the time I am coming back from LHR will it recognise my status when I submit the upgrade or status when/if the upgrade is given? Or will it recognise my mates status being gold and just put me at the bottom of the Gold pile but top of Silver?

Thanks.,

Status is allocated to the highest passenger in the PNR. So if your "cousin" is in the same booking as you, QF will treat the whole booking at Gold level when processing the upgrade.

Question 2 - if you were travelling alone, it is best to put the second upgrade request in after your higher status as the QF (an AA) computer recognises status for upgrade purposes at the time the request is lodged.

Of course (not applicable to you) if it was the 2 day limited offer then you would put in upgrades within that period and not touch them.

Cool, I have not been able to apply for an F upgrade on an I class online before, request submittend for QF1 for SWMBO and myself, fingers crossed :D

Can I check-in online in Y class while waiting for J upgrade confirmation (got a bit less than 24 hrs before departure)? I can see my status saying 'waitlisted' for J but there's not many seats left in Y... don't want me and the Mrs to sit separately in case we don't get the upgrade :\

I suggest you check-in now!

Being checked in with a seat allocated has not stopped me getting points upgrades subsequently granted in the past.

Just returned from a US trip where I opted in for a points upgrade from a discounted Y ticket to J and was successful on both the legs SYD-DFW and LAX -SYD...it made a big difference caught about 5 hours of Zzzz on both legs.

Also made LTG on the way back...so what to do now?

i just received a targeted one of these (last time i saw this thread and saw i was eligible even though i didn't receive the email).

what are people's thoughts on SYD-DFW Y to J for 80,000 points? i'm flying after xmas/ before new year so am half tempted to take the risk and hope i end up with an empty seat next to me in Y, using the 80k towards a future JASA.

i'm sure an economist could explain it to me by way of sunk costs and the like, and yes i'm happy flying in the seat i purchased, but wondering if it would be a nice way to kickstart 2013 a few days early! (i've already received an F lounge invite thanks to the generosity of AFF)

Business is business! So do it!

80000 points for a likely discount economy ticket to business is good value!

Thanks for posting that info. I haven't received the offer, but it works anyway. Just requested an upgrade on an upcoming MEL-LAX booking class Q.

Excellent post :) thanks heaps. I didnt receive the email either.Just checked my flights for may (MEL-LAX-SYD) and i can upgrade too :) upgrades requested. Sweet.

So they are emailing about a month out ?

Wow that's early!

i checked my girlfriend's account and she has a flight in april that's eligible. the guy above is may - so up to 6 months? sounds like probably a glitch in their system where it opens up all non-eligible flights, it's just that there aren't as many keen beans as us around that check all the time.

I would do it if I had 500K points and was booking a 400K award - I wouldn't if I had 400K and was about to book a 400K award - for example I haven't being doing ODUs for my DOM flights recently to preserve points for a family award - now that is booked I can see a few ODUs in my future...

I just got one for HKG-MEL on 22 Dec to J for 40,000pts. I would have thought this would be busier around Christmas time. Bizarrely, apparently I have to do it by 11.59pm on 30 Nov. That's barely 36 hours notice. Why such a short timeframe?

Seeing as a JASA can be had for 60,000 + $300 I think I'll say no for now.

I assume they do it because it is busy. It gets people paying for upgrades that they may have ended up giving away for free as opups.

I got the email today too. Offer valid until tomorrow. I've already called in and put in one PE upgrade. (Something is screwed with my booking and I can't do upgrades online. )
