I just received this email for a forthcoming trip booked into N class.

Limited time offer: Request an upgrade on your upcoming flight

Normally not all fare types allow you to register for your chance to receive an upgrade using your Qantas Frequent Flyer points, however for a limited time we've waived this restriction on the Economy fare you've booked for your upcoming international flight. This means you may be able to use your points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award* from Economy to Business.

Requesting an international Flight Upgrade Award is easy and this offer is only available when you register your upgrade request online at qantas.com from 12:01am AEST 25 July to 11.59pm AEST 26 July for flights departing 28 July to 31 August 2012.

And remember, if you travel on a Flight Upgrade Award, you'll earn points and status credits^ for the fare you originally booked. Flight Upgrade Awards are subject to capacity controls and availability (which is limited).

Got the same e-mail but as I only have some flights to AKL I am not too fussed about using my points for that. On the other hand I checked another upgrade request that I lodged months ago for a SIN to SYD flight and it now shows like this:

Would be cool if I got the upgrade and 1 extra point :D

whats happening with their business seats, sale, sale extended, now upgrade allowed from restricted tickets.... Do you only get this, if you booked via QF direct? as this probably wont happen with 3rd party e.g. expedia. zuji etc

If we were in the USA, you'd be taking a screenshot and hoping the upgrade cleared, afterwhich if you did not get your upgrade for -1 points you would file a complaint to the DoT that this mistake be honoured. :p  :D

Qantas occasionally have this promotion (a targeted one) where some are allowed to register for an upgrade on otherwise non-upgradable tickets (viz. Red e-Deals).

I'm not sure if it relies on a booking directly through qantas.com, but saying that it would certainly make all the processes easier.

Mine was booked via Expedia.

I like your thinking but the fact it is blank in the Upgrade to box might cause some issues :D

OT but having quite a few QFFF website issues at the moment, I think this last promotion must be very successful if the website crashes

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Interesting that the email specifies flights in a certain period. I checked an "O" class booking to NRT in March next year and it's upgradeable...

You could request it and if closer to date you don't want it you can cancel but you will probably not get the chance to request it again

I'd seriously consider putting in the request as it would be a good flight to upgrade on. But I'm travelling with HWMBO who is on a separate booking and it'd be a disaster if one of us got upgraded and not the other. They're also Platinum, but it's just too risky.

Tricky one, SWMBO and myself have done our separate requests for August SIN to SYD, both WP but I can see trouble if I get it and she doesn't :D
My argument will be that I am going straight to work when we land and she has the day off... (might have to let her have it anyway)

Received the email this morning as well and have put through an upgrade request for SYD to DFW next week, had to do it over the phone as Qantas are having problems with their website. Also didn't realise that you can now request upgrades at the gate but only if one passenger is on the booking.

Received the same one as I have an upcoming international flight… though I wont be using it (the flight :()

No email (yet) but the offer to upgrade is there. Shame I don't have the points to do it :-(

Limited time offer: Request an international upgrade Discount Y to J!

Just recieved an email from QF with a limited time offer of an upgrade request on an N fare...Discount Y to J on a SYD - DFW flight next week.

So I am very happy...assuming it comes through.

As a QFF (WP) I could never really understand why QF has this limitation on upgrade requests on sale fares in Y to either Y+ or J, if the seats are empty why not put a smile on my face and let me spend some of my hard earned points.

I get the fact that QF want and need to make some moolah here and J fares are a good source of income but if seats are empty having a bum in the seat/points spent and a happy QFF camper is surely better than flying with a bunch of empty J seats.

May be QF could just classify discount Y to J as having a lower priority than fulll fare Y to J?

Don't get me wrong I am very happy with this offer and I am not expecting something for nothing, it just that under normal circumstances if there are empty seats further up the plane, I would love the opportunity to spend some of my points.

Thoughts?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

There's already a thread, but they are working on giving more people the chance to upgrade, especially when there's empty seats. Issue is how much you think the points are worth and how much they think the points are worth. What they get from you cashing in points and eating better food/drinking more premium drinks may not be as lucrative as keeping you where you are and flying those seats empty.

The website is now working (for online upgrades). I just pulled the trigger on SYD-BKK return. It seems like a reasonable use of points with the value being redeemed over 4 cents per point.

I would rather use the points for a JASA, better value and no lottery!

Thanks I had not seen the origional thread...I agree the issue is how much I think my points are worth v how much QF think the points are worth.
