Elbow wars over precious armrest space could become a thing of the past for flight passengers as airlines consider a new seating layout which would have some travellers facing the back of the plane.

More room for passengers - Travel - smh.com.au

When travelling alone (99%), I actually prefer this style (BA Club World) or configuration. I feel less like I am sharing space compared to sitting next to someone. Based on what I have read, I would welcome this change in the Y cabin.

I really dont like the Club World seating - if you are a window Pax and the screen is up you are invisible to the flight attendants.

At least this explains how they might get 10 across in the new 7e7 :)

Some time ago a staggered seating arrangement was proposed, by Thomson IIRC. This allowed more seats as well as more shoulder room. As far as I am aware, nothing came of it.

I guess one consideration would be the cost to implement it. I am sure this type of seating would be more expensive to manufacture than the standard two or three side by side.

I'm sceptical of new seating layouts. In my opinion while they might jam in more seats you end up with less room and/or more enclosed.

Some cases in point (admittedly all business class)
- BA club world forward & back layout, FAs reaching across aisle pax, window seats shut in
- NZ/VS business herringbone layout, more length at cost of high walls enclosing and difficult to talk to your neighbour (except when using the ottoman)
- SQ new business layout, again quite enclosed (except bulkhead)

Well, Kiwi, I won't be buying it.

I'm quite happy with my UA/LH/OS business class, thank you.

There's that wonderful little button you can press to remind them that you are hidden back there!

This was just the journalist, who I know personally, being mischievous and trying to fill column inches on a slow news day while waiting for the Qantas buy out story to break. We gave him the standard "no comment" because it wasn't something we have considered and he turned it into "Virgin Blue refuses to rule out..." and his sub-editor then turned that into the screaming headline. Don't believe everything you read in the press.

My opinion - no matter how you cut it, increasing the seating density by whatever means has to reduce personal space. Good seat design like CX rigid shells or slimline seats or removing that f^&*ing piece that I always knock my shins on only makes a marginal difference to your comfort. There's nothing like a fat seat with good pitch.

I have come to terms with Qantas in relation to that "wonderful little button".

'Tis called the "Ignore Button".

Not real nice is it, and to fit 10 you would need squash up more i am sure, just reversing half the seats wont buy you close to 20 inches will it ?

Also imagine how familys with children would feel about not being able to sit in a row together.

But i would reserve judgement until i tried it. Its mainly the idea that they can fit extra rather than providing us extra space that is a worry.

I was working for an airline last year when PAIG demonstrated a mock-up of this seating.

It is surprisingly spacious and resolves many of the concerns for Y class passengers.

As for families not being able to sit in a row. This seating allows for family zones where the parents can face their kids, seperate them if they are fighting, or indeed put them in a row if that is what they prefer...very versatile.

Quite clever really and why noone thought of putting it in Y zone before, cannot explain. Ben Bettell from PAIG could not either!

Yes.. I know that button.. tried it a number of times.. Sometimes it has the additional scowl function..

As for the seating.. I've only travelled a few times in BA Club World and had used both a forward and rearward facing seat. I quite liked it. And I slept very well :D

I'm struggling to see how the pic allows a few extra rows to fit in.

Looks ugly, and would remove the benefit of having a vacant seat beside you

And also the ability to be able to lie across multiple seats on lightly loaded flights as the arm rests look like the fixed type.

Most passengers are at their "widest" is where their elbows are near or beside their hips; like when eating or resting.

Traditional designs have passengers seated elbow to elbow. This designs sits them elbow to knee (so to speak), allowing a few extra inches each side to place the seats closer together.

This may allow 12 abreast on a 747 instead of the normal 10.

At up to 12 abreast, lying down would be the least of one's issues.
