A planeload of passengers was turned around mid-flight between Delhi and Vancouver on Thursday, after the wrong aircraft was deployed for the 15-hour trip to Canada.

I find it strange to be posting such a general question about a mainstream airline, but I'm going to fly my son on Air India (aeroplan points) home from Europe in July and I'm wondering what the 'community' thinks of the risk of flying with them?

I was actually meant to fly J in Air India last May but cancelled the trip for non-airline related reasons --- that was pre their airline disaster, but even then, I was reading about all the general choas on some of their flights (flights having to turn back for all kinds of unusual issues), and then the airline disaster happened, and then I...

it’s actually not all that uncommon.

Several US carriers have had to return flights mid atlantic because of the wrong aircraft type, and only last year Virgin Australia had to return a flight on the way to Queenstown because of a similar issue.

Canada seems to require airlines to specify the exact model/variant of aircraft… so you can’t substitute a 777-300 for a -200. Noting that this -200 was an ex Delta aircraft, so I’m not sure there would have been any specific safety issue with the aircraft in question.

ETOPS certification for the frame? RNAV certification for the frame? CPDLC active and functioning, some US FIRs require functional CPDLC for transit.

The -200 flies to US cities no issue. This appears to be a variant specification for Canada.

Air India’s FAOC for Canada apparently only specifies 777-300s. Not the -200.

I don’t know if they sought approval for the -200 and it was refused, or they simply never applied for it in the first place.

Given the -200 was previously flying to JFK and SFO, and the same plane is currently on rotation between DEL and FRA, dunno the reason why it failed this time.

AI isn’t the only airline to have these issues… AA to Naples, JQ to DPS, VA to ZQN.

If there are specifics of this flight that you’re aware of it would be interesting to get your take.
