it’s actually not all that uncommon.

Several US carriers have had to return flights mid atlantic because of the wrong aircraft type, and only last year Virgin Australia had to return a flight on the way to Queenstown because of a similar issue.

Canada seems to require airlines to specify the exact model/variant of aircraft… so you can’t substitute a 777-300 for a -200. Noting that this -200 was an ex Delta aircraft, so I’m not sure there would have been any specific safety issue with the aircraft in question.

ETOPS certification for the frame? RNAV certification for the frame? CPDLC active and functioning, some US FIRs require functional CPDLC for transit.
 
I think you miss the point, individual airframe certification and naviads/comms matter
