Had my first flight as a WP last week, this was in Y travelling MEL-SYD-PVG.

MEL-SYD was a standard Cityflyer service that was uneventful and got me to SYD in time for me to try the Flounge for the first time (that place is paradise - I'm already planning my next run to enjoy the lunch/dinner menu and more of the spa!)

However, I thought I should say that SYD-PVG was a beautiful flight, for the following reasons:

  • Just after take-off, the CSM came by to introduce himself (I think his name was Eduardo, and he apparently spoke Spanish), greeting me by name and asking if he could do anything to make my flight more comfortable
  • Business class noise-cancelling headphones were offered (saving me the hassle of getting my own out of my bag, and the risk of leaving them or a cord behind)
  • Asked for and received J amenity kit (hoping for pyjamas on the overnight return flight)
  • The famed WP shadow - had 26J, so was able to lie across two seats

All in all, a fantastic flight. The only disappointment was them running out of cup noodles after about 4hrs into a 10-10.5hr flight. Was offered some biscuits but they all contained nuts. Was tempted to ask for an alternative in the hope of a J snack, but I fell asleep. I also wondered if that would be pushing the friendship too far, so to speak

The F lounge is a wonderful way to begin a journey. Were you able to move to an earlier MEL-SYD flight?

Nice one, particularly on the headset.

This is par for every QFi flight I have taken for the last 2 years.... :(

Reminds me of a domestic flight I had a couple of weeks ago, was flying J as a Gold , the service I received on-board was amazing, and just reinforces the reason I choose QF over any other airline  (not saying they are perfect every time, but more often than not they are).

I am now 35 SC's away from Plat which I will gain soon!

Yeah. Will be interesting to see how the return trip goes :) I had a similar experience to you - SYD-PVG was amazing! Crew couldn't have done enough, were chatty, preemptive, 100% on the ball. Return trip? Pax had to fend for themselves, service was disorganised, crew didn't want to be there, talked to passengers like they were doing them a favour. Hopefully your return matches your outbound!!

What i find silly is when the CSM stands over you, with their manifest trying to find your name, and after a short wait (which gives you time to decide whether to remove the headphones when they start the speil or take them off and wait) greet you. But being WP is fun. Welcome to the club!

well done !!

I had a similar experience recently on an overnight BKK-SYD flight in Y as a Gold. Despite a full flight I was personally greeted by the CSM and received extra attention throughout the flight by several of the cabin crew. QFi at its best!

Be use to the inconsistency in how you will be treated on different flights. Must say QFi departing from SYd does great WP better in general than ones I am use to from PER. I flew QFi every 6 wks or so and in last 4 yrs have only had one J headphones.

Yeah, that's usually an awkward moment, especially when they can't find you on the page at all! Have been known to thrust out my hand and introduce myself in those cases. Anyway, usually takes me a few seconds to find the pause button on the IFE or finish the paragraph of book or whatever, so a pause can be handy.

Welcome to WP! I have only flown domestic on the last 18 months (6 as WP) and notice how often the team have taken to time to learn my name and occasionally offer a free alcoholic drink on flight where others have to pay. Except when I fly QLink, then the level of service drops, perhaps it is because their planes fly at lower altitudes?

I was pleasantly surprised today, QF436 MEL-SYD in Y, to be asked by name if I wanted my jacket to be hung up - a soft benefit I don't expect when not in J. It was a great way of acknowledging WPness even when riding in the 'main' cabin.

Not only that but priority boarding even worked at gate 2 MEL - when the scrum formed as soon as the announcement started I thought we were headed straight for another fail, but passengers seemed to sort themselves out into the right lanes.

A shout out to the CSM Alida (sp?) who made the flight so delightful I wanted to give her a hug on the way out. Nice one Qantas.

I would like to share a very nice experience I had a few weeks ago. It was on the last QF10 flight SIN-MEL. I was sitting in 48C and kicking myself on the terrible seat choice I made. Then the CSM came with the usual WP1 greeting and offered the noise canceling headphones together with a glass of bubbly. It made me feel a bit better but still... Then the first officer came to greet me and asked if I would like to join the upper deck J for this "historic" last A380 flight out of SIN.
It was a very nice gesture and while I'm used to being upgraded upon check in, this was the first time I was upgraded just before take off.

So what happened on the return flight?

The best way to sum it all up is to get used to the inconsistency and don't have your expectations too high.

Thanks for letting us know about your recent experience. I'll pass on your kind and encouraging words (and virtual hugs) to Alida and her team. She'll be pleased to know that she made a difference to your journey. :)

What a lovely gesture. It certainly was a historic flight. Glad to hear it was made even more memorable for you. Cheers. :)

Maybe I should fly economy - QF 127 sitting in Y+ on 17 May, no platinum greeting ,never addressed by name, no service. In fact after the meal service a bottle of water was handed out and then the CSOs vapourised. As it was a daytime flight I was awake and attentive the whole trip and never saw the staff in the Y+ cabin until the refreshment was offered prior to landing.I was on the new configuration of the A380 - were they too busy being fabulous to the pax in the mini Y cabin behind us??
I did an identical flight late last year and received far better treatment.I know Y+ is not business but small gestures do count.

Is it bad etiquette for a WP pax in Y to ask for business class items when greeted by the CSM and he/she does not have things like noise cancelling headphones in their hands?
