WP asking Etiquette when flying International Y

Boarded flight SYD-WLG earlier tonight and did not get a personal greeting and did not ask for anything anyway.

I wonder if the "greeting" happens on Jetconnect? I've never had it. Only ever on QFi for me.

I got it once AKL-MEL, but it was at the same time as handing out Express Cards so perhaps could not be considered a 'dedicated' greeting.

This morning on WLG-SYD the person in 4C (was in 4AB and moved) appeared to get a welcome by name when handed express arrivals and incoming passenger card. Perhaps he was a Platinum One.

CSM just looked at me in 4D and sort of tentatively placed the 2 cards in front of me and then did the same to the person in 4F. And I believe that may have been it. Flight extremely lightly loaded.

Imagine, if you were on a school camp and you were asked if "You were alright with the meal?" and you requested a teacher's meal. It is out of place.

It's been some time since I was at a school camp but IIRC teachers and students not only ate the same meals, but dined together

I remember on one of my recent flights I over indulged in the F lounge, food, wine and a hot shower, more or less fell asleep an hour into the flight and didn't remember much else, guess this solves all issues, if you are asleep most of the time, you can't really ask for much!

Is that just for inbound flights to oz? say Oz to NRT, that wouldn't apply would it?

Anywhere they'll give you an express card, they should be giving it to the other people you're travelling with. Otherwise there's no point, is there?

Some are more equal than others ....

Had a bizarre and disturbing experience last night. Was coming back from Auckland (i.e. - Jetconnect) and was in row 6 because rows 4 & 5 are not for the likes of me (SG). After take-off there was a 2-tiered system of handing out immigration cards. The one FA started handing out cards from maybe row 7 or 8, whilst the senior FA also had a handful of express cards and a manifest, which he carefully examined before greeting each platinum as if they were a long lost friend. When he got to my row he peered at his list and handed me and the woman at the window just the immi card, whilst our fellow travellers across the aisle got the special treatment. I'm used to the class system (being a party to it) so it was all water off a LBD back.

What I was not prepared for was the confrontation during the meal service. I noticed that as soon as the seat-belt sign had gone off the lady in 5F reclined back fully, which peeved the platinum in 6F but there was nothing he could do about it. A temporary victory I assumed, as the trolly came down the aisle shortly after. I was engrossed in starting my dinner so was late in catching that there was a problem across the aisle. The wife of 6F was asking the trolly dolly to get the woman in 5F to place her seat upright during meal service so that her husband could eat properly. She was told that the woman was sleeping and they weren't going to wake her. What the ...???

But it got worse. The wife was not happy with this outcome and let the staff know, but all she got was a "sorry" as the FA started pushing the trolly further up the aisle. Suddenly the CSM (who had deigned to help in the Y cabin) reversed the trolley back down to our row so that he could abuse the woman for trying to insist on the seat being returned to the upright position. Yep - he abused the wife of a platinum for making a reasonable request!

So was this a case of a P1 trumping a WP, or just a rogue crew?

This is a bit OT but yeah, what the?!?? I'm surprised. I could understand if the sleeper in question had extenuating circumstances (serious illness or such) but otherwise, everyone in Y is woken and seats made upright even if they don't eat themselves, as far as I'm concerned.

Agree. I'm all for reclining to sleep on long flights - AFTER the meal.

I agree too, however this was only from AKL, so maybe 3 1/2 hours. If there is someone behind me on a 3 - 4 hour flight I can't be bothered reclining. I think the CSM was way out of line on this one. I hope 6E/6F wrote a scathing letter to QAN.

That is not good enough. If I am in 6F and the person in front reclines then I cannot eat dinner.

So guess what would have happened next? And it would have nothing to do with me missing dinner....

Yesterday on QF8 (SYD to DFW), got the CSM greeting after take off, asked for a pair of J headphones for my son, they delivered a few minutes later.
Also, son had a massage and we had lunch in the FLounge prior to takeoff, followed by a quick visit to the AC in DFW for showers before going to Denver.
19yo slept almost the entire QF8 flight, he said his plan to party all night in Brisbane and meet me at the airport for 630a to Sydney worked. I'm too old for that.

I think we may have been on the same flight as this sounds familiar. QF44? (which was actually a QF not a Jetconnect flight)

You may be right - QF44 it was. That may explain the tired old plane and tired old crew!

It was a rather sad plane. I wrongly assumed they only sent the newer birds with the ptv's across the Tasman.

It was an interesting altercation from my viewpoint in Row 5. The guy in 6 was WP (saw him in the F Lounge) however the lady in 5F was Gold or lower (no welcome from the CSM - as great as it was - nor an express card).

What didn't impress me was that the two WPs in the Row 4 aisles (plus companions) told the first FA that they'd have the red from J (and received it) and the proceeded to tell every other FA the same when they wanted refills and continued to get it while the WPs in Row 5 got the standard stuff. If they're going to do it for one, do it for all! Worst was when I called for a wine, the FA came up with a white for me and reds for row 4 and then announces "oh you're having the stuff from up the front" and went to get it.

I was lucky enough on the weekend to have the newer 737 on the SYD-WLG return trip. Not that it mattered on the return as I slept for most of the flight.

I have seen the newer 737's on the BNE-TSV run a few times and hardly ever see them on the busier routes such as SYD-BNE.

Most NZ flights should be ok as all the Jetconnect (ZK registered planes) have PTVs. Qantas still operate a small few number of Tasman flights however sometimes use the ZK aircraft or otherwise the newer VH 737s. Moody and I got unlucky unfortunatley (in a few ways!)
