Woolworths Qantas Credit Card Canceled letter.

Seems dodgy to me, why would the C/Card want that ?? the PIN would be the crucial ID not the address I would have thought ??

Maybe they are starting to use the US billing address check style system?

Yes, possibly. Its a first for me with this card though. I think if they try this they will run headlong into Australian privacy law. I know that buying from the USA using local cards is a PITA for this reason.

Yes, well ... anyone know HSBC/Woolies definition of "Business Use" ?? Paying a few hundred thousand in tax or whatever doesn't in itself signify business use, it could well be private - one wonders where that line is drawn.

Exactly, I have applied for the same card, but will withdraw as I found a better offer, my "business" expense is actually PAYG income tax quarterly, although I guess there is some trivial amount of GST as well. Still it's not a government department and they can do what they want (I assume, as I haven't read the T&C).

I felt the Woolworths EDR card rule change letter where they can do whatever they like from July 1st to be a real tightening of their rules on earning points.

Perhaps making big lumpy payments to the tax office on a BAS cycle is a giveaway!

The taxes I pay on EDR have been quarterly personal assessments. I spread the BAS around to other favourite credit cards along with other business quarterlies.
I do need to make QF points and the 0.48% rate is pretty good to create JASA flights care of my buddies at the ATO.

Well I rang to cancel my application and was told it had been automatically declined before it got to a credit check. They can't say why.

I assume because I ticked "self-employed".,,note to self I should put down my part-time salaried job as my occupation in future.

Self employed sole trader here and I had no issues getting approved for this card, was also given an initial limit of >$20k

Hope you write back and tell them that you consider paying your personal tax liability in accordance with the requirements of the tax act to be a lawful personal use.

I got the same letter today as well, for me it was a simple card re-issue as the old one was falling apart. I never do BAS or any other tax through my WW EDR account and its all personal normal consumer use.

I like their wording:

"4.3 Your account must only be used for lawful personal, domestic & household use. We reserve the right to determine what transactions constitute lawful personal, domestic or household use."

Several things spring to my mind - only the police or other vested authorities like law courts can determine what is lawful. Paying your tax (whether BAS or Income Tax) is a lawful activity last time I checked, not paying tax on the other hand is unlawful.

Don't a few commas in a sentance make a huge difference?

Yes, I absolutely agree.

You'd have to pursue them pretty vigorously to even get to this point though. They seem hell bent on not telling folks why they cancel cards, and their T&C are written to imply, when you look at them, that they can decide, without recourse, the conditions upon which they cancel your card. Anything can be tested in court of course, but you'd have to _really_ try.

I still like the card, its still working for me and I use it a lot. But I'm on the serious hunt for another as I now hold the fear that one day I'll wake up and try to use the EDR and it will have been cancelled for unknown (to me) reasons.

My thinking with writing back to them was as cover if they cancelled the card, send the letter registered post. You then have evidence to take to the financial services ombudsman who would be my first port of call.
