Window shades

Oh yes, the issue seems to be that some people are so addicted to the trashy entertainment on their screens, that even the beautiful view out the window can't break their glue to those screens. Sigh, where has humanity come to

Ummmm... how can row 34 BC, DEFG, HJ see the view?

And yes - I do select windows just so I can lower the shades. If window gazers were a little more considerate it would be a win-win for everyone.

You are the one being inconsiderate, by saying people should be eliminated from watching their preferred IFE (the window) because it makes your movie *less enjoyable*

It's already been done and dusted that sunlight or glare does NOT make a movie unwatchable, it simply makes it less than perfect. But closing a windowshade makes the views unseeable. Add that to the fact that the coughpy movies and TV can be watched later in the flight or on the ground, and the views are only there in the instant... Case closed.

Again, they can just select a Window seat if it's that important to them.

Thank you CPMaverick, I couldn't have summed it up any better. Agree- case closed.

It turns out the cabin can be dimmed also in a short domestic flight. Welcome to QF SYD-MEL on Wednesday early evening. The whole economy cabin was dimmed after the meals, the only lights were a few reading lights here and there. Business had their lights on, go figure. Perhaps this is a 'zero-emission' trial from them. Next time I'd expect them to ask for the shades to be put down, too, to complement the effect...

Just proves what I've been saying- dark cabin means less work for the crew. So I'm not at all surprised that they've put the cheap seats into total darkness while up the front, the service continued.

Yet another reason to avoid Cattle class at all cost ;)

As for glare on the IFE screens.....isn't that what the seat pocket's airline magazine is for - to hold it up to the side of your screen to block the glare?!?
Granted, you're probably going to get a bit of a sore arm holding the magazine up during a 16 hour flight, but one doesn't need to watch the IFE for the entire flight.
:p;):)

I don't want to go off topic but while probably viewed as impractical for claimed 'safety' reasons, I'd prefer never to have lights on at full bore.

It's more relaxing. Intercity and rural road coaches never have lights on except at meal stops; some trains - such as the MEL - SYD - MEL and BNE XPTs have lights off at 2130 hours and not on again until early in the morning, making for a relaxing journey, and some airlines sensibly turn lights off fairly promptly after meal service.

And as for shades: I don't want them slammed shut at 0900 in the morning or 1500 in the afternoon, however much cabin crew may want to try to minimise workloads. The sky and the scene below can be wondrous to observe.

Business may have jumped up and down if they got lights out but no jarmies

cheers skip

No reason for that on a 1hr flight no matter what the time. They were deffo trying to reduce their workload. What a load of 🤬
Totally agree.

Qantas have worked out how to do "just" enough service to qualify as service.... whether J is full, or only 2 PAX, you will receive the same amount of service... in my opinion (no, I am not God - everything I say is an opinion)

This issue has been done to death many times, with the usual suspects claiming that their seating position on the aircraft gives them special privileges. It doesn't.

I, on the other hand, do not think for an instant that being in an aisle seat gives me exclusive rights over the use of the aisle.

( I wish I could say case closed, but we are talking about the sort of people here who don't believe that global warming exists. ;) )

It does.

If you are sitting in the aisle and your 'preference' is shades down but the pax sitting at the windows wants the shades up, that is the way it will be (and visa versa). What are you going to do about it?

I detest the American shades down on take off and landing 'trend' but if I am not sitting at the window there is not much I can do about it. I just live with it and move on.

Also, your global warming quip is an interesting one. It is normally the right wing conservative climate change deniers who love to tell others what to do and are only remotely happy when they get their way in full (like telling women what they can do with their own bodies and close the shades etc)...

A. Ask politely
B. Refer the matter to cabin staff
C. You REALLY don't want to know

Obviously A and B will get you nowhere, so you then appear to be advocating violence against others just because you do not fully get your way on a very trivial issue.

It is difficult to argue against that level of 'advanced' thinking...

Option "A" will get me nowhere with ignorant, selfish, onanists .... but that doesn't describe ALL pax in those seats. Obviously.
Option "B" will get me nowhere with ineffectual cabin crew ... but they are quite rare on some airlines. You know - the ones that take seatbelt signs, safety briefings, etc. seriously. The ones I prefer to travel with. Obviously.
Option "C" doesn't include violence, as that is viewed very dimly by airlines (and rightfully so). But if I came across an individual that believes they have complete control of the window shade adjacent to them - regardless of polite requests from fellow pax and cabin crew - then they would be STRONGLY advised not to leave their seat.

See if you can guess what I mean this time .....
