When I was in TSV recently, another J passenger and I walked passed the long que straight to the gate.
I appologised saying I didn't realise there wasn't a priority lane and offered to wait or go to the back of the que.
She said no, it's ok and let us both through. A bit of courtesy on both sides I thought.

I'm another one who like to have the printed piece of cardboard. I've had "mobile checkin" problems just once too often (not always for airlines either), so having the piece of paper just gives an extra piece of assurance as far as I'm concerned. Plus on more than 1 occasion I've gone somewhere for a day trip, spent all day on my mobile and had it run out of power whilst waiting in the airport that evening.

As for the CSM, I'd send in a complaint to QF. There are certainly some FA's / CSM's who need to be told to cheer up or get out. I've certainly dealt with the old bag or two, in J no less (really disappointing since J is still a rarity)

Another vote for always having hardcopy BPs (and keeping them afterwards).

A few years ago, my consultancy went for an AusTrade grant relating to promoting Australian exports in north Africa. It was retrospective, so we were able to claim past airfares amongst other things. For documentation of the airfares, an actual BP was one of the few things they would take as evidence of a flight actually taken! (Yes, its not 100%, but good enough for them.) So I went into my box of old BPs and voila! Worth about $10K.

In probably 80 sectors this calendar year, I've had 1 issue with electronic BPs - at MEL when the scanners refused to work and manual boarding was used. Even so, with electronic check-in, you still get issued the "till-roll BP" which crew check on entering the aircraft ie no need to PYOB for later evidence (though I see BA are trialling a "no check once past the gate", so I expect this to disappear sometime down the track).

Also, preferring to be seated in the Exit Row rather than the Emerald City, check-in via any means other than Mobile is slow and tedious.

Mobile check-in, QFF Card to board ... too easy!!

With respect to the OPs question as to why he couldn't just be checked off the manifest and allowed to proceed at TSV - my guess is that since TSV is not air-bridged, there is extra vigilance to ensure that the correct passengers board the aircraft; even more reason why you'd be provided with a manual BP.
