Why is no alcohol on board from China to Hong Kong?

Does anyone know why you cannot take your premium scotch!! on board from any China airports to Hong Kong. It really is annoying. I asked and got the usual chinese answer NFI.

Are you referring to the inability to bring alcoholic drink through security in China? If so that applies to all flights, not just those to Hong Kong. You can buy duty free and bring that onboard. (Note this info predates the current issues with liquids so may be out of date.)

I think its just that they can't provide a decent glass for you to drink out of ... you're not swigging under the blanket surely and letting the empty bottle roll down the back (reverse picture theatre process) ???

and i wld hate for my bottle to be broken by a gentle baggage handler.

it's a very weird rule. it's not as though on a red eye flight from hangzhou to hong kong oyu are going to crack open the 21 yr old chivas are ya?

Sorry to make it clear it was my duty free i wished to take on board that i had purchased at HKIA airport on my way into China. I admit i have struck this problem domestically as well but I see no use it in it? I have asked but the chinese just say not allowed. Why.

I'm confused. Your thread title says China->HKG now you are implying HKG->China->somewhere else in China. If the latter then that seems to be consistent with the rules I experienced that only duty free purchased airside at that China airport may be brought on board - no alcohol to pass through security.

I bought the duty free airside in HKG en route to China. I knew I cldn't carry it on board once re checking in on the flight from China - HK and I wonder why?? I have never struck this elsewhere. Why won't the Chinese let alcohol through security and put in the overhead locker?

lots of places now where you cannot bring bottles of liquids (other than under 3oz/100ml) through security

Ban it all the way round or put up a big sign.

I fell foul of this one the other day - I bought wine in Aus as a gift for someone later on my trip but first had to carry it via China. Didn't pay attention at check-in but the security people stopped me with a cry of 'not permitted'. Went back to CX check-in and they have 2-bottle wine carriers - the wine survived 4 more sectors in that packaging which was a pleasant surprise. Beijing is making huge efforts to smarten up its image and while they were unable to explain the intricacies of the policy I did get a smile and a 'thank you for your cooperation' out of the lady who stopped me.

I assume the rule is in place to protect the duty free businesses that are present air-side at the airport. If you cannot carry through security, they will assume you must/will purchase from their shops. Protectionism at its greatest.

Nice that CX has wine carriers. SQ had to make some up with cardboard and lots of masking tapes. Survived 2 flights though even with no padding.
