Where will my luggage go?

Hi,
I'm going to be doing the first part of a DONE4 (ex IST) and in one section of my trip I have the following

SCL - SYD (via AKL) on QF322 (LA801) landing at 0720
followed by
SYD - AKL on QF119 departing 0920

So what I'm wondering is where will my luggage go?
Will I need to collect it at SYD for the return to AKL, or should I be able to have QF check it through for the SYD-AKL flight? Or is it likely that they will just send it to AKL and won't have it fly to SYD at all?

Regards,
Malcolm.

LAN will be checking you in at SCL, not QF, and as LAN interline (as part of the OW alliance), they should tag it SCL/SYD/AKL (unless you ask them not to?) as well as giving you your QF boarding pass SYD/AKL. You'll be airside as as transit pax in SYD - you wouldn't (unless you are crazy) want to clear customs, only to check-in again and go through security and customs again....

Agree with what Lindsay Wilson posted. Dont ask LAN to check bags only on QF322 as far as AKL. Will cause problems and more chance of something going wrong.

Enjoy the lounge in transit stops in AKL and SYD. Beware the QF322 transit in AKL is early in the morning. When the flight arrives the lounge may still be closed (doesnt open until 4:30am).

Scheduled arrival is 4:20am, so perhaps the 4:30am lounge opening is to coincide with that arrival. But on such a long sector, it would not be unusual to land a little early, so it might mean a slow walk from the gate to the lounge is the order of the day.

No the 4:30am lounge opening is timed to coincide with 4:30am opening of immigration.

With the new layout it will take 5 minutes from gate to lounge. Opposite gate 7 go upstairs (or take the lift) to the upper level - then along the length of pier towards main part of terminal. Down stairs (or lift), along corridor towards outbound immigration, then left corridor for the lounges and finally up escalator to Qantas Club. Yes its as convoluted as it sounds. Very poor design.

Does not sound too convoluted for someone who is choosing to go SCL-SYD via AKL and then immediately return SYD-AKL only to arrive back at AKL 10 hours after the transit!

It appears Cabbage74 is getting some mini convolution practice to prepare for the AKL-SYD-AKL component. :D

I transferred there three weeks ago and what a PITA it was! I hope for PAX sake it gets rectified very soon.

I think Malcolm is just trying to maximise status credits/points.

I transferred at AKL last week and needed to check in for the onward flight. Bit of a pain when find out transfer desk cant do it (only certain airlines).

AFAIK the only (slight) improvement over the current layout will be a transfer corridor (and rescreening) near the base of the pier instead of using the stairs/lift opposite gate 7 (which has no rescreening).

Definately rated as an insane idea to me. I like planes for getting from A-B not to do A-B-C-B

I thought being in the travel industry you would get frequent requests from people wanting to go SYD-SIN via the pacific, atlantic and eurasia. If you go you may as well go all the way.

Thanks to everyone who has helped with this...NM don't worry I'm doing it for the extra entertainment :D

The funny thing which is really all that funny is that when I get to AKL I have to wait until my sister and father arrive from BNE on NZ. About a 3hr wait. Their flights weren't booked at the time I planned this trip. :x

Ahhh well.

I would have done the same thing. I am sure NM in his travels has been known to take detours while flying. Like SYD-KUL via the pacific circle.

You can always do AKL-CHC-AKL while you are waiting.

Never - not I. That would be rediculous.

However, I have gone from DFW to FRA via LAX, JFK and LHR (had the time to spare and the most direct options were AA non-stop or BA via LGW and old Club World seating. So I went the long way and had QF First Class LAX-JFK and BA J bed trans-Atlantic.

KUL is a pain for OneWorld access, which is limited to CX from HKG. So unless on a Circle Pacific or OneWorld Explorer, I use QF to SIN and then MH for the 200 miles up from there.

Oh yes, and one return trip home from Germany went FRA-LHR-SIN-MEL-SYD-BNE. But again this was for comfort not speed. I arrived into BNE about 4 hours later than if I took FRA-SIN-BNE option. But the option would have been Dreamtime seats all the way. So my routing had me upgraded to QF First LHR-SIN-MEL-SYD which is a much more civilised way to travel. Oh yes, and because of the way our corporate discount operated, the fare was actually about $200 cheaper to go that way than the more direct routing!
