Where in the World should I propose?!

Now I have had another think about this. There is no doubt in my mind that your future travel experiences will be greatly influenced by your time on AFF.So it is only fitting that the proposal should be at an extra special AFF do.

The Maldives!

Or maybe somewhere like the Swiss Alps. There's a new W in Verbier so maybe you can be the first to write a TR on it so I can live vicariously. ;)

Problem with that is it will be underwater when they want to go back for their 25th anniversary.

They'll be fine in an overwater villa. Hence a good idea to check out a beach villa whilst you still can.

Those overwater villas in The Maldives look fabulous. But when we were there it was windy and people said they kept awake with the noise of water sloshing. Maldives are beautiful though. Blue.

No one has asked an obvious AFF points question so here it is.

Do you do a prenup just to cover the millions of frequent flyer points in your accounts?

I do hope the answer is what's yours is mine and vice versa but it is 2013 and not 1973 when we got hitched.

The terrace of Villa del Balbianello, lago di como.

The later in April, the better.

You only get married the first time once.

I had an elaborate plan to propose to Mrs Grubbidok in a snowy Central Park in New York via Christmas carrolers. Problem was it took so long to plan she got frustrated and we ended up accidentally proposing to each other over an otherwise normal conversation.

I would say where isn't important, or even how. Put your planning efforts into making the entire trip a special one for the two of you, and do it impromptu when it feels right, wherever and whenever that may be.

Well I proposed to Mrs davlaw while checking a rain gauge during a flood standing in 2 foot of water.

I think you could do it better.

If you do the 1st lounge or 1st on the A380 it does set the bar pretty high and there could be expectations that things will get better.

Valentines day is a good day in February to propose.

I guess we are all assuming that you will get a yes to your proposal as it is won't be a good trip if you get a no.

So...

Proposing has become a competitive sport and after copping a "bagging" for a poor first proposal for 20 odd years I chose the most expensive restaurant on the planet (round the world 1st class).I popped the question about spending the rest of her life with me over dinner leaving Sydney. I organised for "our song" on the music, gave her a list of 69 reason's to say yes, however she thought I was drunk when I got down on one knee and was reaching under the table for the ring but it brought her to tears and she agreed to stay around and push my wheel chair later in life. We had the cabin pretty well to ourselves which was good and FA took a photo and gave us a bottle of Dom Perignon in San Francisco when disembarking. I'm still happy with the first proposal in a sandwich shop in a country town as it achieved the desired result.

Hi everyone - I noticed this post and thought I would share my experience.

I was thinking of the same question as Alanslegal approx. a year ago and thought that the Qantas Sydney First Class lounge alongside a Qantas A380 first class cabin was the perfect choice.

I also wanted to tie-in the perfect ring (ring maker advertises in the Qantas Magazine) and we designed a new collection named after her.

I booked Business Class tickets for both of us (access to F due to WP) – requested F upgrades which both came through (What a disaster had only one of the bookings been upgraded). Spoke to Qantas about what I wanted and intended on doing.

I booked spa treatments in the lounge a few days out, and also, of course the big surprise. The one element I was trying to make unique was the method of ‘popping’ the question. I had the thought that I would ask via “Boarding Pass”.

The final idea I rested on was to print “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” under the service information window on the pass. Then I needed to work out how to make it a big surprise.

This is how the proposal unfolded:

The ring was designed, and then carefully concealed in a first class amenity kit in my carry-on bag (I used the Payot packaging to mask the purpose-built ring bag). I wanted to ensure the ring did not set off the metal detector and ruin the entire surprise.

A first class host greeted us curb side, and took us through the baggage, customs and normal processes as usual (at this stage the boarding passes were normally printed (no proposal message) – not that we got the chance to look at them anyway).
At the duty free, I was to ask my girlfriend (now fiancé) to look around for shopping items she might like (which for me is very out of the ordinary – I prefer to just get to lounge and relax) and get the First host to keep chatting to her whilst I swapped the ring from my carry-on bag into my pocket.

Unfortunately, for the first time since meeting my girlfriend she just wanted to get to the lounge and relax. Quick thinking by the First host ensured that she was busily talking to my girlfriend whilst I made the switch (That was a close call).

We finally arrived at the lounge and we were greeted as normal, but this time taken to one of the private suites and given menus.

During this time while we were chatting in the lounge about our order, the hosts printed the new boarding pass with the proposal on it - she knocked on the door and passed it to me “saying that ours seats had changed”.

Once this happened I gave my little speech, got down on one knee and presented her with the boarding pass.

On cue, we had the hosts pile into the suite with a chocolate arrangement, champagne and congratulations was displayed on the monitor in the suite.

After this, we ate, then had our spa treatments and were escorted to the plane and our seats in the F cabin.

We were congratulated by the cabin crew – had photos with the captain etc.

I can say that Qantas went above and beyond to ensure that this event was very special.

This was of course the best flight I had ever taken, and will forever be a great memory.

The best part about this plan was that we could spend the next several hours together without the outside world + we had the perfect engagement 'honeymoon'.

Happy to post a photo if anyone is interested.

Wow that all sounds fantastic....you romantic you! But.....how will you top that each anniversary?? MrMac proposed in the kitchen 40+ years ago after crashing a dinner party - we'd broken up at the time. But we celebrated our 40th anniversary by going to Paris a couple of years ago, on the A380 business with SQ. I'd mentioned why we were going and the lovely staff gave us a card they'd made with congrats from everyone from the pilot down, a beautiful bottle of French bubbles for our first night in Paris, and a chocolate cake ganache. Unfortunately it was about 5 in the morning on our body clock so not the best thing to try and eat at that hour (they were delighted we insisted they share). However like the QF hosts mentioned above, most appreciated, going that bit extra to make you feel special

P.S I did take her to the Eiffel Tower the night before to watch the lights etc, she thought I was going to do it then.. was fun to stir the pot a little!

MY husband did that! He bought me a necklace on the morning of our last day in Paris. I thought "Oh well, it's lovely, but that's the only jewellery I'm getting on this trip."

So later on that day we had a dinner cruise on a bateaux mouche (I think that's the spelling) and it started and ended below the Eiffel Tower. A couple on board were announced as celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, and duly presented a bottle of champagne and applaused. Apparently, he'd planned to do it then but got upstaged by this couple and then the Abba music started and the moment was lost.

So when we got off the boat, he asked if I wanted to go up (the Eiffel Tower). It was 11pm and I figured that by the time we'd queued and bought tickets and got up there it would be time to go down. So I said, nah we've both been up before, it's probably freezing up there, and we'll do it next time we were in Paris. So he proposed right there, under it. It was pretty dark, my main memory is that I couldn't see the ring! Anyway, it was a proposal, so I can't whine, but I recommend if you are going to do it, at least pick somewhere where you can see each other's faces and the ring!

We've been back to Paris since, didn't get to go up the tower because they were repairing it. Perhaps the third time's the charm?

Some great suggestions here, but I think my own choice of venue tops them all. I proposed in the bedroom in one of the turrets in the front tower of the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, overlooking the St Lawrence River. Check it out on Google Images. And in February it is especially romantic, as it is intensely cold, the river will be chock full of ice floes, and you can take a sleigh ride around the city wrapped up in bear skins. Quebec and the Chateau are wonderfully romantic.
(And if you want a Churchill connection, that's there too. The Chateau Frontenac is where he and FDR secretly met during WW2 to plot the downfall of Hitler.)
