Where are you going in 2018?

Nothing booked yet - need to be in DC for meetings in late Jan, working on a conference committee for a conference in Tokyo in early April (hoping it works with Hanami time!), family is planning to join me when we realised how close the conference hotel is to Toyko Disneyland. That trip to Japan may end up beign the first leg of our trip to Europe. Nothing planned for that yet, apart from accommodation booked in the Somme from 24-26 April, and registration to be at the dawn service at Vilers-Bretonneux.
I then have to be in Orlando for a conference in late May.

Wow there are some great sounding trips on the cards for a lot of members! :D

In January, we are going to Singapore for a few nights (first time there for more than an airport stopover, very excited!), staying at Marina Bay Sands. Then flying to Bali to board a cruise back home to Sydney, taking in quite a few ports in WA - another part of the world we haven't visited before.

That's it for the time being, hoping a few short trips will be planned for later in 2018 once we return from the big trip.

Some great trips so far - Azerbaijan sounds super interesting.

2018 will mark the first year for a few that I'm not travelling for work (change of jobs - new one is much more stable, but no travel...unless I can swing a conference attendance or two) so no more monthly or fortnightly trips around the East Coast triangle anymore.

That said we have already booked our first trip: a 3 week trip through Europe over New Year for Lady_Lenny's 30th: Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and London. SQ Y to and from Europe, looking at the Austrian Railways Railjet First Class (actually the step up from standard - Business is a step above First) for the Germany/Austria legs and then BA from VIE-LHR, I almost booked us on Air Berlin but couldn't make the timings work out, dodged the bullet with that one.

Lady_Lenny has done Munich, Salzburg and Vienna before, but on a BusAbout tour when she was 19 so it's a bit hazy haha, but it will be a first for me. Looking forward to the cold!!

We'll probably squeeze a Melbourne and maybe a Canberra or Brisbane trip in around Feb/Mar to try and get me back over the line to qualify for Platinum depending on how many SC I need.

We will likely do something in the second half of the year, but not sure what yet. We have friends in Seattle atm, if they decide to stay on another year then we may do Thanksgiving with them for 2 weeks and do the Pacific North West, other possibilities are Chicago-Washington DC for a week or 2, potentially China or even the Northern Lights towards the end of the year. Or if we can't make the finances work we'll probably do a lazy loong weekend either in Singapore or NZ

Off to the UK in April and then onto Washington (first time) and trying to make decisions about whether to go to Nashville and then Little Rock and visit the Clinton Library or over to Yosemite and then back down through the coast to LA. Flights are booked J on points, later in the year will go to Hawaii in Y for our annual trip and hopefully can fit a few more things in too

We are booked for June 2018,which includes CX/AY J to SYD-HKG-HEL, where we take a few days to overcome jetlag. Then to Warsaw for 5 days, express train to Berlin, drive around part of Germany and back to Berlin (abt 12 days). Fly to ARN for 2 days, and then Royal Caribbean cruise around Baltic, including a return to St Petersburg (spent 4 days there this year). Then fly home AY/CX in J ARN-HEL-HKG-SYD,

We have our usual trip to SYD for the rugby 7s.....3rd year now and turning into a family favourite....InterCon (where the teams stay) and a few nice restaurants...
The interesting one for us will be Mauritius. Not sure when (someone else organizing) but I think in April or May. Never been and looking forward to it. Might even do a TR!

Selected birding hotspots in Bolivia & Brazil - already booked but unfortunately in Y as there was no J availability on SYD/AKL-SCL. There never seems to be these days!

Just three international trips next year at this stage:
1. Ho Chi Minh in February for a weekend
2. Jordan, Palestine, Israel and Egypt on CX in June
3. Myanmar in late 2018

But there'll probably be a couple of trips to Indonesia and visits to most Aussie capital cities at some stage.

We'll be celebrating NYE in Mexico City ... after spending most of December exploring Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. A few days into 2018 will see us travelling to NYC for 5 days - perfect way to close out a 5 + week family holiday.

Later in the year we're planning on Cape Town or San Fransisco (maybe both) plus quickie trips to Asia (food) and NZ (lux lodges).

If anyone needs some inspiration I'd highly recommend Burning Man in late August in Nevada. I went last year and had an amazing time. I almost wrote a trip report about the experience but the only aviation related topic was watching the Silicon valley folk arrive on their chartered jets.

Taking March off for a bit of a tour:
HKG first with a SQ F redemption, only suites on SIN-HKG so far, but will keep trying to change that...
Then hop to BKK for few nights and onwards to CPT to tour the southern Cape. Still planning the balance but most likely Drakensberg, Vic Falls and Kasane/Chobe in Botswana before heading back via SIN with a brief stop over on the way home to BNE...
Plenty of SQ J A350 time it has turned out, particularly with BNE's new services...

NYE in Dubai followed by 5 days in SIN (only way to get home from DXB on points!).

Then I have to attend a conference in Barcelona in May (thanks to DSC), followed by a post-conference visit to Lisbon and Porto.

Maybe a week in SFO in September, but after that my book's wide open.

NZ in Jan for a wedding then to ADL for the AFF cruise.

Anzac day in AKL.

Sri Lanka in May

Those are the bookings so far

Maldives in April for 10th anniversary.
Debut on SQ suites SYD-SIN-SYD, thanks to this site...very excited.....hoping for a ride in the new release suites, fingers crossed

We did have SYD-AUH-SYD in EY Apartments, then DXB-MLE-DXB on EK F (777) but the co-payment of AUD3500 or so pushed us back to SQ

Edit to add 4 x J 280k Oneworld award with the kids, SYD-UK-EUR-USA-SYD, but that will likely push into 2019 now

MEL-LON (QFJ 787 ... had to do it)
SYD-LAX-JFK-LON-DOH-SYD (QF F, Jet Blue mint first time, AA F Then QR F on the way back)
Few random trips to SGN in February and May planned but not booked.
After that who knows but there will be plenty...

I will be continuing my 12 month trip. We are making it up as we go, but I am hoping to be getting to south east asia by the beginning of January. We have been to most of the countries already, but there is always more to see. Our loose plans include Laos, Cambodia, maybe Myanmar, Malaysia (including Borneo), Thailand and Vietnam.

At about the beginning of March we will be heading back to Europe. We have an event in Bordeaux in April, but beforehand we want to go to Portugal, England, road trip in France, and perhaps squeeze in the Northern Lights in Tromso.

On our way home we will spend a few more nights in Singapore, before landing back in Adelaide on May 1st, 54 weeks after we left!

Later in the year I would like to get to Japan, or perhaps another trip to New Zealand, but will have to see how things go.

If you are keen to read about where we have already been, I am writing a blog. The link is in my signature below :)

Plans firming up.
Back to Iran for the third year running. Only a short trip of four days.
Paris-Bordeaux roadtrip via Normandy, Mont St Michel, St Malo. Three couples in a van, should be a lot of fun!
Barcelona-Canary Islands-Monte Carlo cruising. 19 days. Really looking forward to this!

And later, a solo trip to Dublin.

No, I didn't plan that. Pure coincidence. In fact this is the first time I've opened up AFF in months!
