When is a Demo not a Demo. Cars

I was recently looking at a Hilux in a second hand yard. Salesman came over and gave me a good old fashioned pitch, especially in regards to it’s single previous owner. Eventually I decided to point out that there wasn’t a single previous owner, and that I was the original one.

I was recently looking at a Hilux in a second hand yard. Salesman...

Did they try to pass it off as a demo or ex-demo? I saw the same dealership yesterday over the same car as in post 1. They now concede it’s not a demo and so are calling it an “ex-demo” 🤔

They will do and call it whatever to get the sale. Demo will give them a slightly higher sale price than second hand. In reality its a demo that has done a lot of kms so ex-demo would be correct.

My current car was bought second hand with 3000kms on the clock at 3 months old so the name really means nothing.

If the car is good and at the right price go for it. Check it against what other second hand cars are going for and get them to match or beat that.

These dodgy dealers/service centres are going to hate when electric cars become more mainstream and they don't need much servicing and they won't be able to rip everyone off as much.

That story reminded me about a Nissan 280ZX I bought new in the early '80s. When it was 2YO I traded it to a dealer in Melbourne with 120,000km on the clock (I did a lot of driving in those days). Back then the previous owner's details were displayed in the window and three years later I found out my car had turned up at the local dealership I had bought it from when a guy rang to enquire about the car "I had just traded". Not happy! I went down to have a look and there was my old car for sale with 53,000km on the clock and advertised as a "one owner vehicle"! The rego must never have been changed out of my name for all that time. After I fronted the dealer with threats the car disappeared that afternoon.

I recently bought a mercedes a250, it wasn't advertised as for sale (was for head of department), it had 3k on the dash.. Once it clicked over 7k it was no longer a demo but second hand, and mercedes got kick backs from head office - which was reflected in a saving of $14k from brand new.
Unsure if it varies brand to brand etc

It sure does @SOPOOR and I'll also be telling the dealer that my wife's 2006 Corolla is a rare Aston Martin that was fitted with Toyota badges.
