While cross-checking my hotel booking with my credit card statement(s) for an upcoming trip to the US - I found a few Hyatt hotels which I booked some months ago on pre-paid/non-refundable rates had not been charged to my credit card. Is this the normal practice ? It can be very confusing when staying / checking out if you receive an invoice for the room but assume it has already been paid.

I've had this in the past with smaller hotels which are non-refundable but only charge you when you stay (and presumably charge you even if you don't stay/cancel). Also on the same trip a JW Marriott also on a pre-paid / non-refundable rate only charged my card 30 days prior to arrival not when I booked.

I believe it depends on the property. I do keep a record of when the charge occurs.

Of course, but with a dozen hotels on a single trip and multiple trips in the pipe-line it's a bit of a drag to keep track of everything - however I have tightened up my book-keeping adding a few new columns (date booked, date charged, cc used, booking site) to my spreadsheet. And while i'm at it, not a Hyatt issue - but most hotels' e-mail confirmation do not indicate if your rate includes breakfast or not,.

I've noticed this happening in recent months, across most hotels. Previously, a prepaid rate was charged at time of booking, but lately, it hasn't been charged til check out. The reason some of the hotels have given us is that they can't charge the card provided through the reservation system and they need to have the card present.

Not sure what that means if you cancel a prepaid, non-refundable rate... Will they not charge?! Haven't tested that yet, but if they can't charge it prior and you do stay, why would it be different if you cancel.

Doesn't make a lot of sense, and I agree, makes things confusing when you think you've prepaid, but then they ask you to pay at check out.

In my experience it gets charged at some point between making the booking and checking in.
This is across most chains. Accor are about the only ones that actually charge at rhe time of booking

In my recent experience with Accor , I did not have to pay in advance. They only ask the credit card number for reserving the room/property and actual payment is at the hotel. ( I have only reserved for 4 nights in Jul 2020) .

Depends on the rate - Advance Purchase rates are charged at time of booking IME.
