What type of 763?

Its really impossible to know which aircraft will operate a particular flight until close to the departure date. For domestic flights, its probably not known until the day before when people with the right access to the QF systems can see what has been allocated.

Note that several of the configs showing on the QF web site are now extinct as aircraft have been reconfigured. The only configs that are used now are:
  • 25J/204Y (International config with Dreamtime Seats)
  • 30J/224Y (domestic config QF 767-338 aircraft with Millennium Seats)
  • 30J/214Y (domestic config BA 767-336 aircraft with Millennium Seats)
It is most likely that your domestic flight will be one of the last two, but no way to know which without seeing the QF internal systems. It can change from day to day for a specific flight number.

Don't know which specific aircraft but it will usually be a domestic config with 30 J seats. The 25 J & 20 J (never been on this one) are international with the Dreamtime seat. The Z aircraft are ex-BA and have a different layout. The others are largely the same as far as I know with some very minor differences.

Can anyone tell me how to find out what type of 763 QF 598 on 04/11/06 is using (Flying with Us - In the Air - Seat Maps - Boeing 767-338ER)?
I should be able to give you a heads up on Friday.

However, If you are doing on-line check in; look for 1x2x2 for Int J and 2x2x2 for Dom J. With WHY; look for row 23 being 2x2x2 with 23F 'missing'. In that case it's an international config; otherwise it's domestic. (Not such an issue down the back; although I do Detest the ZX* ex BA creatures; Old, Shabby and no directional airvents)

Also why are they so many configs?
Over the last 12 months, Qantas have done some considerable reconfiguration of their 763's; converting the 20J int's to 30 J Domestic; re-incorporating the AO craft back into the fleet etc. The Seat maps appear to have not been kept up to date.

Not to mention that the interiors rattle like crazy even in minor turbulence. You would think that the whole plane is falling apart. Don't worry though, it's just the interior thats falling apart.

Conversely I prefer the 336s to the 338s since there is a real emergency exit door ( rather than the small pop out ones ) and so the exit row has more space

While this be true; I don't have a real affection for exit rows; mainly because all to often one is seated beside a COS (AKA "Big B@rst@rd"), thus negating the benefit of extra leg room.

CASA might be interested in this. It sounds as though it's happening all too often.

In my experience it used to be that for trans-tasman you could count on getting dreamtime J and domestic millenium J. However, in the past year or so QF has really mixed up the usage and I have often had dreamtime J on australia domestic and millenium on transtasman. :(

Yes I have had the international J on domestic a couple of times too. They certainly allocate those aircraft to the longer international routes like Asia and Hawaii when it moves over to 763's, but I gather that there are several "excess" aircraft floating around from time to time or during maintenance periods that get switched into domestic service. The QF aircraft to AKL on 763's I gather get switched around a bit too. QF is a bit unclear about what product they actually fly to NZ these days. Out of MEL best to try to get on the 744 service or the NZ 744's or 777's.

The Dreamtime seat isn't exactly top notch these days but still very superior to the millenium domestic J seat, especially in terms of pitch and recline.

For a 3 hour day-time flight, I find the Dreamtime seats to be great. The thing that lets them down is the old standard IFE (small, dull, low resolution screens). But as far as comfort for a daytime flight, I find them great.

The international config found on domestic ops is usually associated with a positioning flight for international ops, or to increase the aircraft's utilisation rather than have it sit on the ground waiting for the next international mission. Nice to get them if you are in J, but if you are in Y they are basically the same - old and in need of a face-lift.
