What sort of $ saving would you need to book a LCC?

It might also boil down to who's paying the bill. If a company / tax deductible expense then LCC may not look so attractive. When ya traveling on a budget, or looking to fit in a 3rd trip for the year, then the LCC might not seem such a bad idea

My hat is off to those whose normal travel provides easy solutions to those problems.
I would not call it easy but I do try and maximise SCs (yes I will route the long way for a few extra dollars) to keep QF Platinum status so I can occasionally choose flights that suit my schedule and not waste a day or two out of my holidays.

Good to see that some people understand. ;) I am trying to find the time and money to have a 4th trip to Thailand every year.

The first step is to stop wasting money on unnecessary things in Australia which is still a work in progress. :(

The second step was to purchase 2 weeks additional leave from my employer. Yes I do lose 2 weeks pay but it gives me 6 weeks holiday a year and I can spread the burden over 52 weeks rather than taking 2 weeks unpaid leave. :D

I went on a spending spree last night.

I booked the SIN-MEL-BNE//SYD-MEL-PER-SIN flights on QF for October-March for SGD1026.

Then booked BKK-SIN return on TG for THB9,930. Funny thing was it would not accept my Qantas Amex Premium card but accepted the Amex Gold card. When I called Amex they had no idea what what happening.

And then to top it all off I booked BKK-SIN-BNE return for April-June on SQ for ~THB28,500 which I thought was a bargain and it also earns Kris Flyer miles.

I will book a LCC in SE Asia one of these days....

Assuming airline safety, assuming they are all equal.

Then I'd want to be saving 65% plus before booking a LCC as a consideration for the secondary airports, lack of food, drink, service, baggage. Actually make that $75% cheaper.

But, as we know, all airlines are not created equal in the world of safety and LCC while they may comply for accreditation purposes, are not equal.

Matt

consideration for the secondary airports,

I guess it depends on where you are in the world. Sure it's a huge factor in Europe, but is it seriously a consideration in Australia? OK there's AVV, but still the bulk of LCC flying is done out of MEL (even most of the major trunk routes are served by JQ out of MEL). In fact across Asia and the South West Pacific, other than operating from some tin shed terminals at some airports and operations at the older (but much closer airports to the city centre) at Bangkok & Kuala Lumpur, which are the secondary airports used by LCC in the broader Asia/SW Pacific?

The ones I am aware of are:
AVV (MEL)
SBX (KUL)
DMK (BKK)
OOL (subst. for BNE for longhaul, but not for dom.)
Macau (HKG)

Well i just paid $560 return with Air asia for a 4 week trip from KL to London including all the extras.I save a mere $590.00:p

You could always book BNE/DRW/BNE on an LCC and come to OzFest 8 in DRW next year 27-29 May 2011.

That is indeed a great saving. My only concern would be spending that many hours in the air with a LCC.

Jetstar? Hmmm.... I think I had better start walking or swimming now if I want to attend Ozfest 8 in DRW next year. ;)

Generally in Oz it's obviously not a problem.

I did know someone who went to Avalon once.

For domestic I'll fly jetstar for $20 ($40 to DRW or PER) less than qantas (still get QP access ;) ). Won't fly virgin unless it's basically free. Haven't tried tiger yet, but I'd probably want a $40 saving.

International to asia ... probably $200 would convince me.

If work related I would never choose a LCC, my trips are frequently long haul, short turnaround. Leisure I travel mainly from NTL so no real choice other than LCC ( except for the Dash 8 to BNE which the shrek family will take in January school hols).

Ah the Dash 8's, we could almost make a new thread asking what sort of time saving is required before you'd consider taking one.

For me it's three hours, unless I arrive at my destination more than 3 hours earlier than the jet option, I won't take a Dash 8.

I like Dash 8s (-200 and -300, yet to be on the -400) so i'd happily take one whenever if the timing was comparable. In fact, i'd chose one over a LCC.

I used to take heaps of Dash 8 flights and always enjoyed them. The service, the views are better as cruise is lower and really quick to embark/disembark (except at SYD where a bus is involved). You feel like you are flying. I don't really see a lot of difference in comfort compared to say a squeezed in 738. Each to their own.

Only problem with the Dash-8 is that when there are storms round, the pilots seem to find every pothole along the way :)

Now that is half the fun. ;) Certainly feel much better jumping across the potholes in a Dash 8 than in a SAAB ....

Once flew from MCY to BNE on a SH6 - took 75 minutes due to storm activity over BNE.

I think we went via Toowoomba!

There were a few pothols across to DIL this morning, felt like wet season weather already when I'm still waiting for the dry season to start! Oh well, looks like we're not getting one this year.
