What are your picks for most friendly city and the least friendly

That's interesting, thanks for sharing! Ill be in both Amman and Cairo shortly. Any reason Amman rated so well and Cairo so poorly? (Excluding current issues of course. Hasn't scared me off yet!)

I s'pose you know that DFAT upped the Egypt travel advisory today to "reconsider your need to travel" and for North Sinai "do not travel" (equal to Afghanistan)? And the media are reporting corpses lying unattended in Cairo streets?

Anyway back on topic -

Most friendly - Vanuatu. Did not meet one single unpleasant local person the whole time.

Least friendly immigration officials - Vancouver, hands down, every time. In fact I am going to need a good reason to be persuaded to spend any more money in Canada (by which I mean travel in Canada) ever again.

I agree. I remember sitting in a restaurant in Tokyo and a few tables next to me was a large group talking so loud, almost shouting, about footy.
I felt so ashamed, I actually hoped they will be mistaken for Americans :)
As a Kiwi living in OZ (but with Australian kids) have had to explain to some of my friends/relatives that most Australians are really much nicer than these stereotypes. It really is true that what is in reality a smallish group of people (well people dont behave like that where I live anyway) are falsely seem by many as an example of a "typical" Aussie. In fact as I explain they are actually quite unusual in most part of Oz.

Probably Americans are the only other group where I think the world view is so jaded by (what I hope is) misrepresentative of the overall population.

Most: Vancouver (or most of Canada), Dublin, Tokyo, Singapore, Maldives, Orlando (Although it was really DisneyWorld so thats to be expected!!), Seville, Prague

As for least friendly, i cant say that I've ever found a city as a whole to be unfriendly, but these are cities were I encountered more "rudeness":
Barcelona, Paris, Many parts of China (maybe because the locals thought I was one of them), Moscow

I'm surprised at the number of negatives for Paris. I found the people extremely friendly and polite - same for anywhere in France. Like an earlier poster I know just enough French to apologise for not speaking their language and saying I'm from Australia. Works like a charm.

Other friendly places - anywhere in Ireland except Dublin.

Least friendly - Rome and New York (and even there I found one really helpful guy on the subway).

It seems that Paris is high on the list of most unfriendly. What I have found with Paris and with the French in general, is that they tend to dislike Americans and the English, however if they know your Australian then it's a hole different ball game.

First trip to France soon; will have to make sure I keep my very English surname to myself!

Most friendly to me would be all of Texas; everyone seems to want a chat. Though I haven't found anywhere in the US particularly unfriendly.

The US can be a very friendly place. They really like the Aussie accent and as soon as they hear it they are very open and welcoming. I have seen though they are not so welcoming and friendly to their own people :-(

Disagree, I'm a Yank, but lived here for 20 yrs.
No issues with meeting new people in USA with local accent.

Or maybe its my magnetic personality:cool:
