On the <already delayed> flight from Jakarta last night, after a seemingly endless taxi prior to takeoff the above statement was made by the CSM. Not sure why but my first thought was a stowaway was on board! However it turned out to be another drunken Aussie hero who was deplaned for being abusive to staff. I guess an announcement that we are returning to the gate to throw off the passenger in row 51 may have given the game away.

Obviously quite annoying because the passenger and her partner refused to take their hand luggage, so that had to be sorted, checked luggage had to be found and removed from the plane, paperwork redone and a new departure slot organised - so quite a delay.

However well done to the Captain for taking decisive and quick action to look after his crew and pre-empt a likely unplanned stopover in Darwin to remove her later anyway.

I was in row 4 so heard what she had to say as she was leaving. Normal stuff "thanks for the hospitality Qantas" "I'm disabled". I'm not one to reach for the Bogan label - but seriously she departed with some racial slurs for the Indonesian security staff and then the ultimate bogan statement: "I'm calling a current affair".

Anyway that was my Qantas inflight entertainment for the evening.

In flight entertainment - from gate to gate!

Seriously a good thing it was dealt with in the ground.

I assume you could almost learn some new words and enhance (or lower) your vocabulary whilst watching said entertainment.
Got plenty of that at work, every day makes me wealthier  Unfortunately not in a good way though

Glad the captain decided to take action before take off. Sad that some Australians is making the rest of us look bad.

It's amazing, though I guess necessary, that even in the face of sheer bad behaviour, one must still maintain the ideas of dignity and respect.

I suppose they also couldn't say, "we're returning to gate to offload an errant passenger," since it's somewhat of a case of innocent until proven guilty, or rather presumed guilt on probable cause.

I suppose the said idiot was simply carried back as normal on the next flight, free of charge.

If this ever gets onto ACA, it'll be the height of ridiculous. You might like to consider contacting Qantas / ACA with a statement of support if that happens.

Good grief What a nightmare! I suppose they say the minimum necessary so not to increase an already aggressive individual

You don't say anything about it until you're at the gate, and they are off the aircraft. Some people will become even worse if they realise their actions have had repercussions.

People who play up on the ground are definitely my favourites. I don't know what makes them think we can't or won't do anything about their behaviour, but it's so much easier on the ground than in flight.

Better to get them off while you can.

One trip SIN-PER a few years ago an obviously drunk bloke was allowed on the flight, it appeared he and a mate talked the CSM into letting him on which was the big mistake of the night. An hour in just after meal service, Mr Drunk Bogan projectile vomits all over his row, the 4 seats in front of him and well into the aisles. Luckily I was just out of the splash zone unlike some poor others. Federal police were waiting once we landed.

I can't remember if the aircraft carrying the "pyjama discrepancy" passengers was already taxiing or still at the gate when they complained of the discrepancy???

I believe it was still at the gate.

Hopefully forfeited the flight for the delayed caused to everyone else and had to pay for the next flight, whether on Qantas or shunted off to another airline...

I guess there is a no fly list for the airline that people can be put on, but another list that you have had one strike against you and you know what happens if you get another strike list would also be useful, not sure if it exists?

jb747 have you had to deal with something like this much? Would it be a once a year thing or a couple of times a career or sometimes dependent on routes to places where more alcohol might be imbibed (not counting lounges where i guess that can be anywhere in Oz or overseas)?

Sometimes it doesn't need alcohol. Issues like that rarely make it to me. The cabin crew are pretty good at assessing people as they board. But, if I do hear about it, then offloading is the only route that I'll take. It doesn't matter to me what it's about. If people are an issue on the ground, they'll be worse in flight. They won't be getting an upgrade. They won't be given another chance.

On the other hand, they make the other 99.9% of passengers look even better.

While technically they may have forfeited their flight, the many stories I have read about a deplaned passenger include a rebooking onto a later flight unless detained by the authorities. Most airlines will not leave their passengers stranded in the never never especially in a different country.

I do think airlines should take legal action via the courts to recoup the significant $$$ lost having to deal with a difficult passenger.

Good idea, that would of course set a precedent so that passengers could have a case to do likewise to the airline for failures, on time running and lost baggage,.

I think the airlines just have to wear some stuff to avoid other stuff they like even less.

You are quite correct BAM1748, if the airlines get legalistic there would be any number of passengers holding grudges wanting their piece of flesh via a lawyer. Quid pro quo...

I don't think I would have been able to stop myself from responding: "yes, you certainly are!"

This reminds of the time Dr. whats his name got off at LAX by choice because they didn't have the correct size PJ's for him in F. The captain certainly let the pax know, at the man's request, about the reason for the delay because it was on social media within minutes.

Would much rather not being at 37 thousand feet with a drunk person running riot on the plane... Glad for the captain to offload before in the air... It is even better when they don't even get on the plane at all because they are too drunk... I was on a flight to CNS one night and a non status pax did like the PB lane and said something to one of the pax walking down the PB line and then a punch up happened and police was called the drunk pax never made the flight but we got delayed as they had to find his bag and also his wife's as well...
