My brother and his GF were lucky to fly back from LHR on Friday...they missed both the ash clouds and resulting mayhem, lucky blighters.

There is more potential disruption to occur early this week:
BBC News - Warning of ash flight disruption

Parts of the UK's airspace are at risk of closure from Sunday because of volcanic activity in Iceland, the Department for Transport has said.

Disruption could hit airports in south-east England until Tuesday, it warned.

Note that disruption has been occurring in recent times (eg parts of Europe / Northern UK etc), however this one is likely to affect Heathrow...

This week I am flying for a funeral - back on Saturday and then back to the UK via HKG on 26 May...

I am wondering if I could have made my trip (which was a last minute award so no real options to change) more risky - flying to Ash affected UK on BA during the strike season VIA THAILAND...

Sometimes its advantageous to bet against the odds.... Favour the bold...

It would be possible though difficult to do. ;)

Not good - LHR now shutting overnight:

Heathrow closed in new ash shutdowns | News.com.au

Heathrow closed in new ash shutdowns

LONDON'S Heathrow and Gatwick airports will close for six hours as ash from an Icelandic volcano drifts further south.

Heathrow will close for six hours from from midnight GMT today (10am AEST), the UK's National Air Traffic Services (NATS) says.

"The high density ash cloud continues to move further south in the early hours of (today)," a statement from NATS says.

"For the period 1 am (12am GMT) until 7am (6am GMT) Monday, airports inside the no-fly zone as imposed by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority, aviation regulator), include; London Heathrow, Gatwick," said NATS.

Several other British and Irish airports closed yesterday due to the cloud.

Manchester Airport in northwest England and Dublin Airport were among those affected by the cloud yesterday, with the ash levels deemed too dangerous to fly through.

Manchester was among a host of northern British airports to shut from noon GMT to 6pm GMT (10pm AEST to 4am AEST yesterday), including all those in Northern Ireland.

Dublin, Ireland's main airport, was to close from 6pm GMT until at least 8am GMT (4am AEST to 6pm AEST) today.

If we don't talk about it then I assume it will not disrupt my trip today...

Interesting, i see QF9 is "delayed" ex-SIN, but many of the BA flights are still scheduled to arrive between 0500 and 0700 which I thought was (part of) the closed hours?

Virgin Atl have diverted their ex-HKG flight (? to where)

Qantas has now updated its website, confirming interruptions to its schedule:

Fly - Major Disruptions
"QF1 and QF31 will divert to Frankfurt until more information is received. QF9 has diverted to Dubai and is not due to arrive into London until 6:00am on 18 May."
Is FRA unable to cater for the A380, hence the reason QF9 has diverted to DXB instead?

QF at DXB? Wow.

I wonder who QF will have to pay up to get support on the ground at DXB? (Perhaps the same people who help BA)

I like hour the SMH have decided that UTC changes for daylight saving, wait a minute, its GMT :D

"Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, was due to be closed from 0000 GMT (9am AEST) to 0600 GMT (3pm AEST) today "

Clowns....

FRA has a dedicated A380 Heavy Maintenance facility and was one of the first airports in the world to be made ready for the A380.

I think this must be lady nights flights as I just asked in the f lounge and they were confident if London landings

Volcanic ash cloud: London's Heathrow Airport closes
Umm actually they haven't decided that utc changes. But they have decided that AEST (eastern standard time) changes or they have made the wrong calculation.
