From Travel Today

Longhaul low cost start-up Viva Macau was scrambling to get 200 passengers booked on its inaugural flight seats on Cathay Pacific and Qantas today after it failed to secure regulatory approval on time.

It is not yet clear what approval is missing, but an airline spokeswomen told Travel Today that the 11:45 flight from Sydney tomorrow could not take off “due to regulatory issues”. Around 200 fare-paying passengers were scheduled to fly to the Chinese city, along with media representatives and company employees. The carrier is now seeking to endorse tickets on other carriers flying to and from the region, including neighbouring Hong Kong.

The spokeswoman said no clear timetable for the launch has been finalised yet, adding that more information would be released later today.

From Travel Today-

Passengers bumped off
long haul low cost carrier Viva Macau’s cancelled inaugural flight from Sydney will be compensated by another free return ticket, as the carrier faced a public relations nightmare.

The Macanese carrier’s Sydney operations were left in confusion yesterday after it was forced to pull the plug on the launch of services from Macau to Sydney due to “unexpected delays in obtaining regulatory approvals”,

Con Korfiatis, the airline’s chief executive told
Travel Today it was awaiting final approval from CASA. He said the cancelled flight was a “result of unexpected delays in receiving Macau approval.” He added a new start date would be advised in the coming days.

“We expect only a small number of flights will be affected until we have received the final approval.” he said.

The airline is offering
affected passengers an additional free 12-month return ticket in addition to a full refund or endorsed flights on competitors via Hong Kong.

Virgin Atlantic said it had endorsed 43 tickets for today’s scheduled inaugural flight from Sydney on its services to neighbouring Hong Kong. Other carriers have also been pressed into action

Pretty good compensation I would say:mrgreen: Fly to Hong Kong (only short ferry trip to Macau) instead via a full service QF or CX flight, and you get another free trip within 12 months on Viva Macau. I dare suggest a significant number of passengers were going to HKG anyway, and were taking advantage of the cheap airfares on Viva Macau;)

Exactly - am thinking a Macau-Oasis linkup would be a great way to get to the UK or US on a budget

I'm looking for a visit to Macau, but the usual suspects like bestflights etc don't even have this as an option..

Anyone know any suppliers?

Viva Macau has said its delayed inaugural flight from Sydney is expected to take off on Thursday – but Australian aviation authorities say there is only a 50/50 chance of that happening.

The long haul low cost carrier has been forced to cancel three flights – last Thursday’s inaugural flight, Sunday and today’s service – since it failed to gain regulatory approval in time for its August 16 launch.

The airline said approval was expected to be received today from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, in time for flights to start on Thursday. But CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said it was touch and go whether approval would be granted in time.

“We are only talking a only a matter of days but I’d say it’s only 50/50 whether flights will start this week,” he said. “Approval could be granted on Wednesday or Thursday but it could push out to early next week.”

Gibson said the delay was caused by Viva Macau simply submitting its application too late.

Indeed! And to think it may have been avoided by lodging an application a week or two earlier!!
