The penne pasta as noted by others above in the BNE lounge tonight. No 'dry' pasta to be seen and I have to say I have paid for far worse -

I'm here now and it's one of the better offerings that has been served here

Yesterday CBR VA lounge lunch offered a watery Minestrone soup (only hot option) and the prepared salad was a black&white rice salad with occasional bits of pea and corn, so barely a salad at all.

Almost makes you look forward to the half size muesli bar onboard ;)

A photo of the 'offending' salad from the BNE lounge last night. I thought it was fine and similar to most salads in most lounges on most airlines. Add some of the spiced chicken they had on offer and would be a good snack....

What more can be done with a simple salad?

...

Not much more... me being a meat eater would also add whatever meat is available - chicken, cold cuts...

For a rice salad, they would only have to make sure the rice is cooked enough so it isn't like eating bullets - that's likely the biggest challenge and why I don't like many rice salads. Also, I don't know why, but many rice salads I've eaten add some sort of weird dressing which is far too acidic. I realise that many salads have acid-based dressings so they are slightly sour and what not, but at least they have the right ingredients in it to demand that kind of dressing.

SYD lounge had a Tortellini Boscaiolla pasta on Saturday lunchtime, with a bowl of chilli flakes alongside. I happen to love Chilli.

Went back for a second bowl. Probably THE nicest food I’ve had in any airline lounge, anywhere, anytime, and that covers about 1000 lounges on 6 continents.

If this is the ‘slop’ others incessantly complain about, they really need to get out more!

Want a Zagat Guide restaurant - stay in the city and spend $200 a meal.

Mexican theme @PER tonight.

Tortilla wraps with chilli con carne.

Bean mix, chilli, sour cream and cheese.

Tasty/Nice

That's a bit harsh. Last few times l've been in the lounge, the hot food options have been pretty good.

Did you construe "grub" to mean it was poor quality food? Because that wasn't the intention - "grub" was being used in the general slang for food.

This must be recent because the only hot food I recall from a handful of previous VA lounge visits last year was soup (and toasties). Things like hot dogs or a rather lacklustre Mexican food variety were only periodic.

Kiwi alternative, The Huhu Grub...best cooked n warm, but nutriant full raw none the less.eight_col_huhu.jpg

How was it?

Looks like VA are really rolling out the grub... then there's new international routes and a slated new domestic J...

Yeah, it was tasty enough. I have had this in the Lounge previously though.

The meal options have been fairly positive, though I completely avoided last week's option of some Mexican-themed slop. It honestly looked like the result of someone with diarrhea. It looked like a sloppy thick-soup, with corn and beans amongst it, and I didn't hang around long enough to see how people were making it work for them. It may have tasted okay, I just couldn't stomach the look of it.

I wish I had a photo of the rice salad in CBR, looked nothing like that. It was 95-98% rice. Probably local chef (or manager) interpretation of the recipe to cut costs.

Yes. If someone used grub as a term for food, I'd see it as a negative.

Anyways, the hot food options in the BNE Lounge this morning are good/tasty.

I'm with anat0l. The Aussie vernacular for any food can be "grub". It doesn't infer any other meaning (good or bad) AFAIK and is frequently further defined as good grub, excellent grub, bonza grub, pathetic grub, bloody awful grub etc!

I must be getting old Grub was NEVER a negative word. where food is concerned!

I don't know if it's an Australian, American or English word, though. Of course, "tucker" is very much Australian, though it's not thrown around as often in more cosmopolitan centres, but it probably was more common around or just after WW2, which leads me to think that "grub" is an external influence.

Calling someone a grub is negative indeed (and that can be connected with food, i.e. describing how someone eats), but when grub refers to food, I'm of the understanding that it is neutral.

Anyway... back on topic...
