You may have read recently that Virgin Australia systematically increases its "D" class Business fares 28 days before departure:

Did you know that VA also systematically adjusts its Economy X pricing based on the number of days until departure. They don't even hide the fact - on their Economy X webpage, they even have this disclaimer below the example prices:

^Prices quoted in the table above apply to seats booked 28-180 days to flight departure.

For example, here's the seat selection prices on a SYD-BNE flight more than 180 days from now:

If selecting a seat on a flight departing in 28-180 days, the price drops (although, I have no idea why the middle seats are more expensive!):

Then, once the flight is less than 28 days away, the prices go up:

The Economy X Exit Rows are a great deal at the 28-180 day mark.

I’ve booked them on a couple of upcoming SYD-MEL trips.

And the fee is refundable if a paid upgrade to Business comes through.

I’ve had a run of decent luck with both biz upgrade bids ($70 bid on SYD-MEL) and just leaving seat selection until I get to the airport and asking nicely for an exit row seat. One of those two has worked out for me over my last 6 or so flights with Virgin.

I always book economy X - usually with points. Good value for extra legroom esp on longer flights. It helps that you get priority boarding as well so you can avoid the crush to get the overhead storage and sit down. Must remember to do it more than 28 days out although I usually do anyway.
