Virgin Australia "Milestone Announcement" June 1, 2023

Saw this on facebook, had a laugh

Isn’t an easy way out of this. I mean they advertise it then in a matter of seconds have tens of thousands of people hitting the site. Nothing they can do to stop that.

No bad PR though. Now if this was the Roo it would be all over the media.

So they finally have the Store back up after being down “for maintenance” since Sunday. But:

Getting everyone to turn on notifications for their socials and then posting about the drop there is what created the mess in the first place. I think the only way out of this is to genuinely drop them unannounced at some random time. Otherwise you’re just asking for thousands of people to DDOS the store…

The great thing about techs is the unwavering optimism that they found and fixed the one and only impediment to the whole country being able to hit their app at once without issue.

Isn’t that the plan?

People can hit the on line shop when it’s up again but there may not be any of the 1 pointers there 😎

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Simple solution. You enter into a ballot for the prizes over a week. If you win the ballot you get a special link to allow you to pick from the available awards.

Demand managed.
But isn't the purpose of this PR to get ppl searching the velocity e-store?

A ballot would negate this purpose.

Well, isn't the unavailability of the eStore (after so much fanfare) actually going to drive them away from even trying and that's the reverse of what VA were trying to do. This is an epic fail in my eyes and has detracted from me ever wanting to use the eStore. Just give me the ability to use my Platinum Upgrade Certs for non-Flexi fares, say from 2 hours before flight time. Not everyone can afford Flexi fares, nor are there many seats left when you can use them (7 days prior to flight). Easier to go on the points waitlist from the moment you are able to (generally after booking).

Agree. I am only visiting the rewards store to see if the one point rewards are available and if not I am leaving pretty quickly. Overall the experience is not positive and will not encourage me to visit the store for general purchases.

So after an IT crash from overload from a PR fanfare, your detracted from ever using the estore?? wow. had you ever even used it previously? Did you realistically ever actually intend to ever use it?

If we all vow to never use a website that crashed we'd all be reading books & newspapers. sorry but it happens often.

I for one occasionally use both QF & Velocity estores, when they have upto 10 points per dollar spent, can be good value.

I agree J upgrade certs for WP should have more flexibility.

Hand on heart I can say I'd never heard of the VA estore or rewards store or whatever it is, until this promo AND the brouhaha accompanying it.

I guess a crash though over-demand would be partially satisfying to the promoters and I really doubt that those who attempted to log in initially will be turned off at all. Wonder what the EDIT ‘return visit’ metrics were when the QF website crashed on their promo?

Not willing to throw some significant cash behind the systems to get them ready for a gimmick sale that isn’t netting them much benefit sounds more like it. Perhaps also trying to work out how to stop the bots buying the lot also.
