Lamb Shank with Gnocchi

Was amazing and so tender. Service impeccable with the exception of a discarded water bottle found on my seat upon boarding.

^I had the same dish on BNE-MEL (VA352) last night. Very tasty. Enjoyed the carrot cake as well. (It looks like you received a far more generous wedge of cheese than I did though!)

Great service from the CSM (only 3/12 in J). Always take the hot option, so had the bacon and egg tortilla with tomato salsa

Why the hell do they serve it with Jalapeño peppers - damn I needed 3 refills of water, my nose began to run and well I was well acquainted with the toilet during the day. Catering fail for me

That is tortilla, Señor. You need the jalapeño por el beuno flavor. :p Apologies to any Spanish-speaking people on the forum - offence not intended

Most of the younger people today would probably find little problem with having jalapeños, which are mild compared with quite a few common chillis, so they didn't think much when adding them to the dish.

Presentation looks a bit iffy, but an interesting combination.

Not sure what the sides were except for the cabbage, but duck and sauerkraut (if it is indeed sauerkraut) is a very viable combination, particularly when the duck is roasted and rich in flavouring.

Duck with braised red cabbage is also quite common, but in this case usually demands a solid starch to complement the rich duck and sweet cabbage, e.g. lentils, potato dumplings or spaetzli.

Same menu both ways but very different taste and presentation. The PER>SYD tasted much better

Entree both ways, Prosciutto with fennel remoulade & dill (very nice)

Petuna ocean trout with kipler potatoes, roasted fennel, capsicum & capers.
Hubby said it was dry


Fragrant coconut braised beef short rib with steamed rice - again, dry.

Beef. Didnt look great but I thought the taste was a big improvement on the Syd flight. Hated sharing it with hubby.

Yesterday's 14:15 departure

There were two main meal choices, a cold trout salad or (I think I heard) duck with gnocchi.

I chose the latter and it was absolutely delicious! Although, it looks the same as the "lamb shank with gnocchi" upthread, so am unsure whether it was duck or lamb.

There were only 2 passengers in J and service was attentive through the whole flight, with regular drink top-ups. We were also proactively offered the pantry menu after the main meal, with choices of chocolates, popcorn, chips, cheese, nuts and olives. I chose the cheese plate and olives:

One thing I noticed since the last time I flew VA J is that they now have sparkling water. My only criticism is that when I asked what type of wines were on offer, I received an answer of "red or white". But to her credit, the FA did go back to check and there were four options which seemed reasonable.

VA business class has always had sparkling water since day 1 on all flights.

Responding with a red or white wine comment meanwhile is very average.

Interesting. Last time I was told sparkling water was not available on 737 flights.

Breakfast was bacon & egg omelette with goats cheese (thankfully this time without jalepenos). Only two of us in J so easy time for CSM who was able to chat.

J was full as I snagged the last J seat using Fly Ahead. I'm thinking this dinner was a duck ragu atop pearl barley?? Quite tasty and finiswhed the lot - went well with a glass of red.

I recall being offered both still and sparkling water on both sectors.

That's not my experience, even if they didn't have sparkling water they could always take a can of soda water from the Y trolley.
 
VA 878 SYD-MEL last Friday (6:30pm departure).

Was sitted in Y and got friendly with the CSM who offered me the 'spare' J snack which was a dip (looks and taste like hummus) with flat bread together with cheese and ANZAC biscuits. The hummus was nice but the flat bread could be better if served warm.

No complaints there as I would otherwise have the pretzel snack mix served to everyone else. Definitely got some looks from other pax.

VA691 MEL-PER from last month, 20th I think. Evening service, doesn't look like I got a photo of the menu.

Bresaola starter, been around a while, or soup I think, but I quite like the bresaola so stuck with that. Duck was on the menu and having seen a few people show it here it was too hard to turn down. Served with sweet potato mash/puree and red cabbage. Photo doesn't quite do justice - I thought it was pretty good. Cheese plate to finish, I've no idea how much sugar is in the fruit pastes, but they are more moreish than crack, so I'm guessing its lots.

Wine's were a mixed bag, pinot noir was excellent with starter, the heavier option (cab sav I think) I took with the main was pretty ordinary so went back to the pinot. Was offered choice of still or sparkling and it was topped up regularly - was pretty good service on an almost full cabin.

Late morning VA flight CBR, pretty normal milk run. For a change I was booked in J (D fare) thanks to a generous client. Only 3 of the 8 J seats on our 73H were occupied, I had selected row 2.

So our FA approaches me and asks if I would like a snack, but unfortunately they had run out and there was only one choice left. When the food came out only one J pax actually received a meal.

Is it acceptable that VA would only load a single meal (of that option) for J pax or dis they load several but the tech and cabin crew get first dibs and J pax take whatever is left?
