VA468 BNE-PER on 16OCT. Another good effort overall.

VA468 BNE-PER today has the following menu (with champagne on offer as well).

I have had some (but not all) of these items previously. Hopefully a good flight coming up.

Champagne was on offer SYD-DPS, but only pre departure as just 1 bottle is loaded! Am guessing Trans Tas might be the same? They did have the dessert wine, unlike the east coast flights. Keen to hear your experience as we are booked early next year.
Belatedly coming back to this thread, I can confirm that champagne is *not* served in trans-Tasman J, and nor is dessert wine. I got the impression that the catering is exactly the same as on domestic J flights of a similar length. Which, for the most part, was decent: it seemed to be the same lamb and olive gnocchi dish, which was absolutely delicious, and the bread was great too. Can't remember what the starter was. I thought having a dessert of just a little boxed carrot cake was extremely cheap, though - that's what you get as a trans-Tasman Y dessert on AirNZ, if you're on a package that includes food. NZ will also serve you champagne and excellent dessert wines.

Service was extremely friendly, from a CHC-based crew, though at times seemed to be trying a bit hard to be a bit faux posh. Really, really eager to please... which is no bad thing of course but it seemed slightly tacky in its eagerness to be so "premium". Still no real complaints about the service. The cheapskate touches of the meal were annoying, but I couldn't fault the flavour of the main.

On another note, can anyone confirm that the 0900 SYD-MEL departure definitely still gets a breakfast service, rather than snack? It seems like exactly the kind of thing that VA would be tempted to cut back on in their current cheapskate frame of mind...

First pic is of my daughter's meal a salad of some sort which was overladen with beetroot.
Second pic of mine, a beef meal. I'm not a big red meat eater, but I didn't want the salad so I chose it. It was OK, but not great. Beef was a bit tough. Cheese and crackers were nice and the dessert was a cupcake that was OK but the icing was sickly sweet.
Had one Crown Lager and a chardonnay.
Very underwhelming.

That looks really ordinary. Looks like a whole heap of leftovers thrown together and reheated :O Only thing that looks even remotely appealing is the bread roll (And the crown as well :) )

VA790 CNS-BNE 16 December 8pm departure

Offered: chicken mushroom soup, chicken & minestrone soup or a salad

Opted for the mushroom & chicken soup.

Was a bit under heated and a bit gluggy. Overall it was ok.

Not offered pre departure water or juice. Perhaps they have stopped this.

Yes, it looked like it just came from the supermarket in one of those vacuum bags soups. Anyway it was filling enough. Quite different from the full meal offered on the 5pm Qantas service (CNS - BNE), admittedly this is a virgin snack vs a Qantas meal

I got the same meal on a Trans Tasman flight this week - the size of the meal and the single course serving is very poor for a longer flight.

On the return Qantas flight I got a full 3 course lunch.

They really should be ashamed of this. There is nothing premium about their catering, indeed the whole airline. This looks nothing like what they advertise on their website and on billboards. They need to be taken to task
