Vinomofo Wine Deals

I cracked 2010 Reschke Empyrean Cab Sav I got from Vinomofo about 2 years ago last night. Amazing wine, definitely the best Coonawarra Cab Sav that I ever had. Tasted better than I recall 2 years ago and probably could go on cellaring for 10-15 years more with ease.

I noticed there is 2014 on sale on VM and wondering if anyone tried it?
So I ended up opening one this past weekend with a friend and can say I was very happy with the wine. It started off very closed and muted with a good amount of acidity, and then really opened up in the glass over the night and showed surprisingly fruity berries to go along with that powerful acidity from earlier.

I like to try and find bargains at price points, I don't think this is a 150$ wine, but if someone told me it was worth 80 or 90, I'd say that's probably about right for the quality. I really do want to see how this one ages, we opened it up alongside a 32yr old leasingham which gave us some interesting perspective.

I did earlier ^, i'd been looking out for it for a long while as it was on my radar to try as a potentially good wine at good discounts. For under 50$ its a great pickup imo

Thanks. I must say that 2010 opened up pretty much from get go. The colour was impenetrable dark red or bright red under light with no sign of brownish tint and ullage was a centimetre or less.

Those vintage charts are a mystery to me, 2017 was a very tough vintage for MR. Some wineries managed to make a few good wines, but broadly speaking 2017 wines are green, high on acid, low on fruit and tannin. How 2017 rates higher than 2016, which was a good maybe great year, is inexplicable; as are some of the scores given out to wines from 2017.
 
I'm in the same boat with the 2016 Sharktooth. Was stale and not quite right, - either in flavour or aroma. The consensus in our tasters was it's cork was not right. I really wanted it to work. Yes we only paid $16 a bottle, but it's a pretty reputable brand, so it explains the disappointment across the board. I usually take along bottles i don't quite love to bbq's etc, but these remaining 5 will be sent back.

I recently bought and tried Voyager Estate Cab Sav 2017 and quite frankly it was barely drinkable. Exactly how you described, green, high on acid, low on fruit and abrasive to drink. Very disappointed with their flagship Cab Sav. I remember fabulous Voyager Estate CS from the past.

Halliday ranks the MR 2017 vintage the equal worst since 2006. Maybe 2017 MR wines are more cellarable according to Langton...

VM are going to have dedicate an extension on their stockroom to accommodate the returns from this forum alone ;)

Finally cracked a 16 Sharktooth and it is a strange McLaren Shiraz. Medium bodied to the extreme but maintaining a whopping 14.5% alcohol. If you have a palate attuned to fruit forward wines you probably only taste alcohol. I wonder if this was picked green. I think the oak is well handled, not obtrusive and adding a layer of supporting chocolate to the tepid and undeveloped fruit. Maybe they were going for Euro style on but ended up with something closer to eurotrash.
Still I enjoyed this enough, although a shame it's under cork and all the vagaries this brings to such a delicate fruit palate.

In pure coincidence with the sudden appearance of bargain museum releases of this wine - I bought a bottle of the 2013 Moonambel Shiraz (and Cabernet) at the Dalwhinnie cellar door on release and I just drank it tonight. It’s pretty bold for a Victorian Shiraz and agree it has strong savoury notes but it still has a pretty luscious vibe to it. Maybe even could earn some of those Doris Plums from Sam Kim. It’s drinking really well and definitely didn’t feel long in the tooth.

Not sure if anyone has tried the Brightwater Pinot Noir (or previously mentioned as I am only a sporadic forum visitor) however I previously purchased the vertical pack and have just ordered another pack of the 21. I thought it was as good or better than most pinot at the price point (which I generally steer clear of). I found it was very drinkable and the second half of the bottle was even better the next day.
