Halliday Wine Companion

2023 Edition - Jeni Port

Destemmed and crushed fruit with some small parcels of whole berries, fermented in stainless steel and concrete, left 10–16 days on skins, matured 19 months in French oak. Another strong, composed, concentrated Tranter shiraz from what was an extended vintage which allowed for extra hang time. A mighty tidy shiraz, in striking deep purple hues with lifted aromatics melding with black berries, licorice, chocolate and Aussie bush notes. Taut, fine tannins are in perfect balance.

James Suckling

A beautifully soft red with round tannins and plenty of blackberry, licorice and asphalt. Cured-meat undertones, too. Medium-bodied with creamy and velvety tannins that are wonderfully integrated. Drink or hold.

The Wine Front positively reports from the headings "Very good wine. As neat as it is intense. Tasted : Feb22" and "Tasted double blind in a line-up of Heathcote shiraz. Muted aromatics but the palate is imposing. Plum, soy, redcurrant, mint and smoked cedar flavours work ..."

Looking forward to tasting it. Whilst I don't expect a top shelf Heathcote like a Wild Duck shiraz, I think it will be suited perfectly to a pizza or a midweek wine.

I had their lower end Pastiche Shiraz (don't think they make it anymore) at a restaurant a year or so ago and noted it in my phone as one to explore. The Tranter is a step up on the Pastiche, so hope it stacks up well and exhibits the Heathcote qualities we love.

I bought 6-packs of this (it is Roseback) and also the Vine Vale Road Shiraz 2021, with discount codes.

I am putting them both in the set of 2021 reds for my Monday tasting and noticed that the detailed back label, which includes vineyard component %, picking dates and oak regime is IDENTICAL.

It will be interesting to see if the contents come across as being identical during the tasting.
Tasting last night:
Well, I can't definitively say they are the same wine, but they are quite similar. The group ranked them a little differently, I preferred the Roseback to the Vine Vale Road, the group slightly the reverse, neither particularly attractive wines. The Vine Vale Road perhaps a little leaner and drier, lacking fruit presence, pretty sure the remainder will go back.

Response from VM just now
Our buyer has touched base with the winery and they've confirmed they had made a mistake in communications to us. The reference to the 95 points and gold medal were from Wine Showcase not the Melbourne Wine Show, sorry about this! Here are those details:

Wine Showcase – 2023 June Tastings – 95 Points
This sumptuous shiraz shows black and purple fruit intensity, warm spice, dried flower, cedar and dark chocolate notes on the nose. The richly expressed palate delivers terrific fruit power combined with rich texture and grainy tannins, making it opulent and sturdy at the same time. Captivating and most pleasing throughout.

This has now been updated on the website. Also the Roseback was incorrectly shown as a single vineyard wine, but it is actually a blend. I've been advised the Vine Vale and the Roseback are blends from the same vineyards, but not the same final wine. Sorry again for this, if you were wanting to organise a return please do let me know and I can help out with that!

Even the same wine same vintage can taste different. I'm not sure it's enough to exonerate VM
Or Rosenvale. This was my first buy of their wines since the 2018 vintage, will be the last.
I seem to remember they used Diam seals back then, now fairly cheap looking "natural" corks, another reason for me to avoid.

Does anyone know that this is? I got some Montague pax Chardonnay from vm earlier in the year and am hoping this is the 21 vintage, but don’t think Montague is a 5 star Halliday winery.

Wills Domain
The Coveted Chardonnay 2021
Rating: 95 SK
But they are 5 black stars, although VM sometimes use ratings from the wrong edition.

Isn't Montague the old Heydon Estate? If so they have fantastic fruit, and previously held 5 red stars.

Correct.

Have bought some so hopefully that’s what it is.

I couldn’t see a 2021 vintage of the coveted anywhere (don’t have access to wine orbit so couldn’t view the reviews you linked too).

Montague Pax 2021 is 95by Erin Larkin, but price and a/v don't match, winery is 4.5 black stars. There are no Heydon/Montague reviews on Wine Orbit as far as I can see.
